Good fuzz for a fuzz virgin?

Never owned a fuzz. Any suggestions for a good one to start out on?

Well eventually you'll need all of them so it doesn't matter where you start.
Page or Hendrix?

Any favorite recorded fuzz tones in mind? Be careful, though: once you open Pandora's box....

If you want that Big Muff sound, I'd recommend the Earthquaker Hoof. Amazing stuff

You'll figure it out.... when its too late. I think anywhere that sounds good to you is a good first. Familiarize yourself with tone benders, fuzz faces, big muffs, and the many variants of each. You'll stumble upon something that will work for you. Check out Basic Audio, MJM, Fulltone, Analogman, maybe Stomp Under Foot for starters. Its a long journey finding 'the one' sometimes.

Fuzz is. Prepare.

Page = Tonebender MKIII

Hendrix = Fuzz Face

Jack White = Muff

Now add several talented boutique builders that craft hybrids of these classics. It's endless, you can chase it endlessly. I'm down to my top 15 never sell fuzzes. This week.

I like Monsterpiece, Jimmy Behan, Basic Audio, Black Arts Tone Works, Foxrox, Analogman....

black keys and bands alike use kind of "difficult" fuzz pedals.. meaning that not everyone is ready to use a superfuzz or a maestro fuzz and not that easy to make it work with a given rig.

I would start with a tonebender mkII for Led Zep tones, or a fuzz face for classic Hendrix. Dunlop fuzz face, the blue new one, has silicon transistors and is cool. You could also try a germanium fuzz face for more raspy and less gain-y tones. There are plenty around, or you can skip them and get yourself an Analogman germanium fuzz, I may be the last Ge fuzz you would ever need.

But Jeremy is right, if you got the fuzz bit you will end up with one of each.

Tonebender MkII into your AC30 will probably sound pretty cool. I like Hudson's stuff, and it isn't outrageously expensive. Stroll On is his MkII.

I suggest to start with a Fuzz Face. It can do sonic mayhem and then sound clean when you turn down your guitar's volume. 2 sounds in 1!

Good one to start with is Blackout Effecters Musket fuzz. Very versatile. Either that or a Skreddy Screwdriver Deluxe which can be both a great OD and a fuzz
