Tubes question in my VHT Pitbull........

I've got a VHT Pitbull 30. My first EL84 amp. Its got EL84 Sovteks and JJ 12AX7's. The Cleans are great......very Voxey . But slightly on the metal side when cranked.........Will a Tube change effect the overdrive much or is this just a way EL84's are?

Can I get a more Vintage sound out of my VHT with some N.O.S. tubes?

I'm being Picky here becuase I think the amp sounds great........but I just don't want to spend good money on something that ain't gonna happen.........thanks!

It's not the EL84s, it's Stevies design. That's why a lot of people (me too; I own a 45 and a 50) buy VHTs...a fine clean coupled with a new-age grind.

I'd start with a 12AT7 or a 5751 in V1 (the preamp tube closest to the input jack typically). This will lower the gain on both channels; see where you need to go from there.

I have a high gain matched set of JJs (EL84s and ECC83s, from Doug's Tubes) and a Mullard NOS in the mix as well. I'm chasing that gain you're trying to get away from, though! LOL

Also, NOS are demonstrably better tubes, but my take on it is "If I don't buy new tubes too, befoe long I'll have NO choices..."

Pay me now or really pay me later!

That'll work nicely. Also, feel free to write if you need more info. I'll be glad to help where I can. Also, if I don't know, I'll tell you that as well...

I won the tube! I'll give ya a tone report as soon as it arrives!

From the back of the cab I'll try it in the right most spot first?
