Yep. Led Zeppelin (IV) and Who's Next; maybe the two best albums by two of the best bands ever, same year.

And they are all turning 40 years old this year.

Led Zeppelin IV

Best selling hard rock album of all time. 23 million copies in the US alone.

WELL, THE COOLEST THING ABOUT THAT YEAR, AND THAT LIST OF ARTISTS...

they weren't all copying each other.

they were breaking ground.
trying new things.

not like today.

My favorite was the Allman Brothers At Fillmore East, but Sly and the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On and Led Zep IV are my 2nd and 3rd favorites from 1971.

I'd say 1971 was probably the best year for rock music. Music in general perhaps? 1972-1974, maybe '75 had cool stuff to offer too.

1971 was a good year, but Billboard's Dec 1969 album chart had Abbey Road, Led Zep II, and Let It Bleed in the top three spots.

If you look at the years 1967 through 1976, it's astounding how many great albums were coming out each year.

AND, we were all still digesting Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. IMO two fabulous examples of Post-Psychedelic West Coast Americana.
