Tube Amp for Bedroom Player

Hey guys,

So it's time for me to spend some money on a nice tube amp. The catch? I can't play as loudly as I'd like because my neighbors will hate me. I will be playing in a pretty small room (11X11) so it wouldn't sound great loud anyways.

So, I'm a big fan of Pop-rock and blues so I'd like a versatile amp. Favorite player is John Mayer. My budget is $2,000.

The pedals I have are:

Keeley Compressor
Lovepedal BBB '11
Xotic BB Preamp
Line 6 DL4

Please help!

1. Get a master volume amp or...
2. Get a non-MV amp and one of the better attenuators (Aracom [$600] Faustine Phantom [$800]... and there are others)
3. Know that even a 5 watt non-MV amp might be too loud given your stated situation. See #2.

I've bought mostly used amps... yes there is some risk involved, but my experiences have been vastly more positive than negative. One bum deal out of many. As always, caveat emptor.

The Pro Junior is an eminently great lower volume amp that can capture a lot of great Fender tones. I just spent the entire afternoon with my Pro Jr. on 1, with an RC Boost to fatten up the sound, having a great time.

Buy a Red Iron lil Mo amp (1w tube) and Vox Nighttrain speaker cab. Great clean headroom, takes pedals well and is small enough that you can push the tube to overdrive.

My classic answer to this question is still the best... Carr Mercury. Do not buy anything until you have demoed one.

What about being really nice to your neighbors? Get a computer, a POD Studio GX, and a good set of headphones.

Whatever you get, make sure you leave $120 for a roland microcube...so when you realize that even a 5w tube amp is too loud to break up naturally, and attenuated amps at low low volume dont sound too good, you can get the microcube...

I have 2 MV amps (peavey classic and hot rod deluxe) the classic is your best bet...with good tubes, the drive channel sounds decent at low volume, as does the clean...

I've been stunned by how good my Rock Block (http://www.surprisesoundlab.com/) sounds. I play through a 1x12 cab, use a Strymon El Capistan and can get GREAT cleans and even greater overdriven tones at about the same level as my acoustic dreads. I'd say the cleans are very Fender-like and it gets to super Vox tones as the OD gets going.

An added bonus is the Rock Block can be used as an overdrive pedal into any other amp - and a fantastic OD pedal it is!

Give a listen to the soundclips on his website, worth checking out.
