Tweed Deluxe combo cabinet dilemma
As I'm thinking about building a Tweed Deluxe, I wanted to check out some things regarding the combo cab with you guys who perhaps tried it out.
Would it make sense at all, putting the Tweed Deluxe chassis in a bigger cabinet: I thought of making it a bit wider and a bit taller. The standard dimensions are 16.5'' H x 20'' W x 9.5'' D and I was thinking of changing the specs to: 18'' H x 22'' W x 9.5 '' D. Now, does this make sense at all or should I leave it just the way it is meant to be? Would the sound be altered in a bad way or would a slightly bigger cabinet contribute in a good way? Since it is an open back, I keep thinking the whole time, the change might not be that different at all? A bigger cabinet could also give me the benefit of having a second baffle board, for example I thought of 2x10'' speakers so I could have something that's a little more flexible. I could have a 1x12'' and a 2x10'' baffle board, and could change them whenever I felt to try out something new. Now, would this be handy or not? BTW, 2x10'' and a Tweed Deluxe, a big NO or a nice alternative? Why did I think about this in the first place: well for example the Brownface Deluxe was already in a bigger cabinet and with each model change of the Deluxe through the 60ies and 70ies, the deluxe cabinets became bigger. Ok, reverb was added, perhaps the cabinets needed to be bigger because of that, but still.. I was also thinking of using 3/4'' spruce wood for the cab, not pine. Characteristics might be similar, could benefit from the lighter wood.. So, leave the cabinet specifications or change it a bit and make it a more flexible? What do you think? |

I'd go bigger but, stay with pine. I like 2 tens but, for a tweed deluxe I'd build a bigger 1x12 cab.

The Fender 5e9 Tremolux was basically a tweed deluxe with tremolo in a tweed pro sized cab (built to hold a 1x15 speaker) with a baffle cut for 1x12. From my understanding, this cut down on cabinet rattle and gave the amp a bigger sound. You could make a Pro sized cab and cut 2 baffles, one for a 12 and one for a 15!

I have my 5E3 Deluxe
In a larger cab and it rocks. The cab is from Mojo and it originally had a 2-12 baffle in it. I liked the tone much better than the stock Deluxe cab. I currently have a 1-15 baffle in it loaded with a Jensen Alnico 15 and I love it. I have never considered putting the chassis back in a stock cab after hearing the difference. It now has room to bloom!
Enjoy, Rob

1x15 speaker bro! Tremolux style. I'm now convinced that is the way to go for that circuit.

I have one in a head cab, that was built to take 6L6, EL-34, or any variants. I have a sweet pair of KT-66 tubes that are very hard to fit into the head cab. I would love a bigger, deeper 1x12 cab also. I have not found someone who makes it, except Bob Burt, and the cost is pretty high. I don't want a 15", does not suit my style. Know anybody who makes one, that is not a super high dollar custom build?

Wow, these are great ideas. I think my 5e3 would sound awesome with a 2x10 baffle. I think I'll build a new bigger cab that would accommodate.

Look at my signature.
I've used several cabs/speaker combinations with a 5E3 for years. Think outside the box, go for it! Grungy

Nice to see that many of you, who share the same thinking..
For now, I will definitely go with a larger cabinet, probably 10 inch deep instead of 9,5 inch. It will definitely be wider, probably 23 or 24 inches! I have also found some information about vintage deluxe cabinets, it seems that Fender has also built some bigger cabs for the Tweed Deluxe, look for yourself: http://www.300guitars.com/articles/v...y-henry-gross/ Ok, lots of arguments, to try out something bigger! |

I thought about doing that with my Clark Beaufort... it's my go-to amp. I just love the tone of the 5E3. I have a 1958 Jensen P12Q and NOS RCAs appropriate for the era. Icing - and worth the cost.
Here's why I didn't go with a different sized cab: I want the tone that the Tweed Deluxe is famous for. If I deviate from the specified design, I may get something else - maybe better, maybe worse, but certainly different. I thought "The same tone, but bigger!" However, the 'but bigger' disqualified that idea in my mind. I built my first cab to dimensional spec - except I used voidless birch ply and butt-joints instead of going with pine and finger joints. The cab sounds amazing! It's really, really awesome. But I can't help but wonder if that's how a vintage 5E3 should sound (having never owned one). So, guess what I have in my workshop now? Pine planks and a dovetail / finger joint template. But, here's what I'm NOW thinking... locating vintage pine planks to create the cabinet. Maybe that's a bit too much? Nah. A few years back a company called Better Built Workshops made what they called a "Deep Deluxe" cabinet. Just an inch deeper then the standard cab. They've since closed.
Jim at Lil Dawg used them on many of his builds while they were available, I had 3, I now have 2, they sound great. Jim now has Mather build him "Deep Deluxe" cabs. I don't have any of those, but Jim says they sound nearly as good as the Better Builts. They must have had a stock of some great wood or something, but they sound killer. I'd go at least deeper. - D
