Opinions Bearfoot or Mad Professor

I'm interested in the Honey Bee. I know it's got more then one name depending on who builds it.

I won't spend for the BJF it's too much $$$.

But I'd like to know what you guys think is better and why between the
Bearfoot and the Mad Professor.

Thanks,
Matt

You're gonna get pelted with this so lemme try to just get it out fast-- the MP Sweet Honey is *not* a Honey Bee. They share some similar characteristics in that they are very touch sensitive and have a really great sound, but the circuits are not the same. The main difference is the MP tone control and BJF nature control. It's not a gigantic difference, but an important one.

The Bearfoot HB is the real circuit. If that is what you want, the choice is simple. That doesn't mean the Sweet Honey isn't a great pedal, it is, and some people do prefer it. But were not talking apples to apples here.

Good luck finding the best one for you

I had a Sweet Honey OD for 6 or 7 months straight... but wanted something with more gain and recently sold it to try out a few new things. After getting the Bearfoot Model H and being pretty impressed (though, probably a bit too much gain for what I'm going for), I opted to try the Bearfoot Honey Bee.

It landed this afternoon.

My initial impression is that the Honey Bee has a more unique tonal character and a broader range. It's probably in the same gain neighborhood as the Sweet Honey, but it will loosen up and get more fuzzy than the SHOD ever could.. and on the other end of the 'nature' knob, it's actually somewhat similar to the SHOD.

Both are pretty dynamic and touch sensitive, but like Mike said — we're not exactly talking about the same circuit.

The Honey Bee is Bjorns take on a Supro amp. The Sweet Honey has the characteristics of a Marshall. Both are sensitive to playing dynamics. The Honeybee has great clean and overdrives (has a fuzzy breakup) when playing hard. The Sweet Honey overdrives more aggressively and is louder.

The Bearfoot is a great buy if you don't want to pay the price for a BJFE.

The Bearfoot is the exact same circuit as the BJFE Honey Bee, but as others have said, the SHOD is a different pedal. It's still designed by Bjorn but it is based off of a single sound that originated in the Honey Bee and it was taken from there. That's why people say that they can sound similar, because they SHOD begins with a sound found in the HBOD, but they both go different directions and sound different in every other setting. The SHOD has a bit more gain and is brighter. The HBOD is a warmer overdrive with a fuzzier and looser feel and a bit of sag. Both are very touch sensitive and the HBOD is a little more so. The HBOD is sort of Valco/Supro/Tweedy and a lot of people say the SHOD is Fender-y, but it's definitely not Marshally. Bjorn's Marhsall-esque pedals are the Mighty Red Distortion and Dyna Red Distortion (as well as some other designs, such as the Cliffhanger and Stone Grey Distortion).
