Scam or not?

I have a Buy it Now best offer from a guy in S. Korea that wants the guitar shipped to California to his shipping company, which will then ship to him.

Is this a known scam? It seems like if I get a PayPal payment, and the guitar is successfully delivered to the address in CA, I'm good.

FWIW, he has about 20 transactions, all positive. None are as much money as this one would be however.

Thoughts?

Aren't you only protected ( if the shipment is lost or stolen) if you ship to a Verified Address?

I wouldn't do it unless the address in CA is the confirmed address that shows on his Paypal payment. Also, who has a shipping company of their own in another country that they refer to as such? Usually, only scammers.

Yeah that struck me as weird also... "his shipping company"... what does that mean?

I sold LP to a guy in Argentina but he told me to ship it to Miami. I assume he had some shipping company take it from there. It all went smooth. Some guys have cheaper ways of getting something shipped to themselves which is why they might have you sent it to a particular address.

But since Ebay and Paypal usually take a buyers side in a dispute, just be careful.

I had someone ask the same thing and chose to avoid the situation. After the initial contact he emailed me directly and saw an Asian text email address which was an immediate red flag. I asked him where he was located and was told CA. I was still suspicious and was finally asked if I would ship it to CA so he could have someone else ship it to China as he was just visiting. I didn't respond and a few days later sold to a US buyer.

Asking an international buyer for a payment by wire transfer usually takes care of any doubts.

People in other countries do that.

For instance, back home in Costa Rica, people use a company that has mail boxes in Miami and then ship stuff to Costa Rica. Way cheaper, and they can buy stuff online from stores that only ship within the US.

Confirm that the shipping company is legit and that the address is verified in Pay Pal.

I have shipped overseas a couple times where the buyer had me ship within the US and then that address (person) would ship it to them overseas. It worked out great, I tried reasoning about why he did it, and figured that the buyer probably thought he could get a cheaper/more honest oversea shipping rate with his buddy, that way I don't overcharge him on shipping. Either that or the buyer thought I only shipped in the CONUS and thought of a way around it.

I sold a pedal to a guy in Italy. He asked me to ship it to a friend of his in New York State first. Transaction went smoothly, no problems.

You never know, though...

It actually puts good and bad buyers off, as it is such a pain....... Just saying is all.

I get things shipped to my brother in CO all the time, to on ship to me, But I agree with the rest, if it don't feel right, don't take the risk.

There are a lot of third party shippers these days that international buyers (myself included) use to get past the 'We only sell within the USA' situation.

A lot of online stores offer free shipping in the US, but very high costs to ship overseas. Case in point, I tried ordering a bottle of guitar polish the other day and the polish was $20 but the shipping to Oz was $40 !! Yikes.

What I do in this case is to make a lot of smaller purchases from various sites and get them shipped (generally for free) to my third party shipping agency. They will then, at my instructions, pack all the small items into one package and ship to me for generally WAY cheaper than all the individual items would have cost to send to me.

So, in this case, it sounds legitimate - but I would still encourage you to do due dilligence and ensure that the payment side of things is completed safely.
