I agree with most of what's been posted here on the two speakers but not entirely. The Alltone, to me, is not an early breakup design at all, it appears so only in comparison to the Jensen which you have to pummel to break up.

I have Alltones in 3 different amps of mine right now which is what I base my reactions on. The Alltone definitely crunches when pushed - it's among the speaker's finest characteristics - but in no way is it a low headroom speaker say like an Emi Red Fang.

I have a Jensen Neo in a 4th amp now and recently sold a 2nd Neo that I'd pulled from another amp. That speaker is almost EV-like to me in how it responds back with what you put in. It reminds me also of the Weber California. I love it in my Tone King Continental but it sounded awful in my Traynor YGM-3 Guitarmate (sterile/no character).

P.S. The Neo sounds WAY louder to me than its SPL would suggest. I can only conclude that either Emi and Celestion are overstating, or Jensen is understating, their speaker efficiencies.

I own a Rev kingsnake combo and I just happened to purchase an AllTone from a fellow TGP'er. I tested both the Neo and the AllTone in the Kingnake for hours last weekend. I found that on the 20watt setting for the amp I was able to make some notable differences: the Neo definitely gave the Kingsnake better bass and low-midrange response, while the AllTone was better for putting a little bit of hair on lead playing. The AllTone was great for singing leads, but I believe the Neo was warmer and punchier which would make for better rhythm playing. I think what I will try to do is put the Neo in the Kingsnake and run the AllTone out of an extension cabinet to see if I can get the best out of both worlds. Something tells me the AllTone would sound better with a EL34 based amp like a Dr. Z with a single-coil guitar. I think the AllTone made my Kingsnake sound somewhat thin and didnt give it the fullness that I was looking for...

Thanks for the feedback re: neo vs all-tone. I have the neo in my beloved kingsnake combo (that amp never ceases to amaze me, and I can't see getting tired with it EVER) and was curious about the all-tone, but based on the descriptions here, while they are both clearly very capable speakers, it sounds like the neo is the one for me.

I agree that the Alltone doesn't break up as early as a Greenback style speaker but it does break up at pretty low volumes e.g. when pushed by a 12-15w 2 x 6V6 amp. I know some people think the NEO is sterile but that's the last word I'd use to describe how it sounds with my Bassman.

Horses for courses...

CQ - there is no escape, you NEED the extra speakers/cabs.

Hey guys,
Just out of curiosity....does anyone have any good preamp tube recommendations for the Kingsnake? Im thinking of putting a NOS Mullard 12AT7 in the V1 position to achieve some warmth and lighten the gain. What about for the other preamp tube positions? Has anyone had any luck experimenting with various 12AX7s like NOS RCAs, GEs, Mullards? I'd love to hear your feedback. Thanks

Advice sought: 12" speaker for a Goblin

Hello,

I picked up a Goblin amp with a beat up cabinet... I decided to have it re-cabbed, for a 12" speaker...

Any thoughts on speakers that I should check out?

Thanks!!

No doubt -- it's the amp I don't 'need;' I've got 3 ~5w amps already. I've just been wanting a Gobby for ages, and they don't seem to show up often.

After a ton of experimenting, for the past couple of years, I've stuck with a 12AT7 in V1 of my 'Hound. Offers a bit more headroom and a bit less gain/"hair." I can't remember for sure but I believe it's an RCA.

Just want to be certain I wasn't misunderstood. I don't find the Neo intrinsically sterile at all, if I did, I wouldn't be keeping it in my Tone King Continental where it sounds awesome! But it does hold together extremely well, especially at the bottom end, where it is powerful and doesn't flub at all from anything I've ever been able to throw at mine anyways. It definitely don't do "crunch" like an Alltone, etc. In my Tone King with its quad of 6V6s it sounds a level of magnitude better to me than any speaker I've ever had in it (and I've had 6 or 7 others there). In my 2XEL84 Guitarmate, however, it really did exude sterility - no "excitement" to the tone. This undoubtedly had as much or more to do with the amp than the speaker alone.

Stratboy, I've been using a JAN Philips 5751 in V1 in my Hound. So far so good. I've also tried the Mullard 4024 (12AT7) and a GT 12AT7 (both sound nice). Right now, my ears like the 5751. A little grind, but still enough clean headroom. My $.02.

Ditto - Mulland CV4024 or NOS 12AT7 are both great options

Ya know...I'm sitting here with an AllTone in it's box, necer been used, and a Deluxe Reverb Reissue. And I'm getting curious.
