received new warmoth neck

I got my new neck in the mail yesterday. The neck is very nice with a beautiful pau ferro fretboard. The fretwork also appears to very good but I'm still waiting on the tuners until I can string up. My problem with the neck is the 59 roundback doesn't feel anywhere near as big as the measurements would suggest. I don't think it's any thicker than an american standard neck and the only reason I bought it was to get something substantially bigger than the american strat neck. They list the measurements as .860-.970 which is a pretty big neck. It feels more like .820-.900. Anyone else have a 59 roundback that feels the same?

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a cheap set of calipers and find out if the specs are correct. I have had the 59's from Warmoth and sold them all as they were good but not 'keepers'.
I have 3 of the Fatback necks on my 'keepers' now. The Fatback was spot on for my hands... (oh, and mine are 1-5/8" nut widths)

Strange. I have two 59s and they're definitely chunkier than a standard Strat neck. Not huge but in the ballpark of a PRS wide-fat, and maybe even "fuller" on the sides. At least that's how they feel to me.

I'm with LPRS, measure it in case they've sent you the wrong profile.

Which nut width did you order? That will certainly influence how it feels.

I have a '59 profile neck (1-piece maple, 1-11/16 nut). It does not feel huge; just a touch bigger than a standard Fender C or Warmoth's standard thin. You have to be looking for it to notice it. But if you switch back and forth you can feel the difference.

It does seem to be more stable with humidity than some of my other maple necks. As far as tone goes, it's hard to separate out the effect of the neck but the partscaster it's bolted to is now my #1 strat.

Agreed. I have a Goncalo Alves/Pau Ferro in the '59 roundback. I absolutely love it and would say it compares very closely to the PRS wide-fat on my McCarty. I also bought it wanting something bigger than a Fender modern C and have been very happy with it fulfilling my intention.

I got the 11/16th width and that's exactly how I would describe it. Just a touch bigger. I'm going to call them and see If I can return it and order either the fat or boatneck.

I have a '59 flatsawn roundback with pau ferro board and ss frets. Slightly chunkier than standard fender with meatier shoulders. Perfect for my hand and certainly less fatiguing during four setters.

It replaced a neck on a strat that was my workhorse of 20 years which made it easy for me to discern the tonal and countour differences. I had the reverse experience from the OP in that my initial reaction was that it was fatter than I imagined. However by the end of the day my hand had already adjusted and appreciating the extra control acquired due to the meatier shoulders. Was also loving the snap I got from the stiffer board (prev. rosewood) and ss frets. Subsequently acquired an drop-top alder body from them too and presently, this partscaster is my working No.1.

My caliper measurements were exactly as they posted.

I ordered an all maple lacquered '59 neck from Warmoth that arrived thinner than it should be. Frankly, it took so long for the neck to be made/delivered to me that I used it in my tele project any way. It's still a great neck, just a bit thinner than I'd like. No biggie.

Yeah mine is a tad smaller as well but I dig smaller necks as well
Mine also a 1 5/8's so it makes for a smaller feel

When mine came I did however think the sane thing
But it is a neck with a fretboard that will put you off visually
If it was one piece maple then it would look thicker
To my surprise when I measured it with my calipers it was just a bit smaller

I know from experience that the neck will feel much smaller when you are just holding it loose in your hand

once it's on a gtr all strung up - it will feel much bigger

trust me on this.. I will bet a caliper shows it to be what you were expecting

Countless times, local guys will come over to choose a neck profile only to choose something WAY to big for them - based on them just picking up loose necks to judge

even a 1" baseball bat neck feels ok to me unmounted.. but on a gtr , it feels gigantic

I thought the same thing but when I removed the strings and took off the old neck which I always considered a thin neck it felt about the same as the new one. I'll string it up tomorrow and see how it feels.

The strings should make it feel fatter, shouldn't they?
