New Chili Peppers Album, How Are You Liking It?

Now that it's been out for a bit, what do you think of the album and the new guitarist?

At first listen, I dug it. But the more I listen, I think I'm getting bored with it.

It's sounds like John Frusciante, except without any of the aggression or cool solos. Which kinda leaves me wanting more.

I know that people say "...but Josh is a textural player..." I get that. But a lot of his texture comes from noise.

Cool that they still love what they do and have a work ethic to keep it going. I just can't into them anymore though.

I wasn't really digging it at first 'cause it wasn't Jonny, but after a few listens there's some good stuff in there. Better than one hot minute.

The songs are good and I dig the album overall, but Frusciante's absence definitely comes across. Josh has moments where you hear John's influence for sure, but there's just something about the way Froosh sticks out in a song that I guess I've grown so used to listening to them that it's hard not to notice. I thought it was just where I'm such a fanboy of his, but I've asked several of my other non-guitarist friends and they each said the same exact thing; that you can tell Frusciante's missing. I think it's because John did more than just incredible guitar work, but also his contributions on backing vocals. Not just harmonizing, but layering multiple melodies in sections that really made a lot of their tracks rich.

As far as him being textural I don't mind that at all, and I also wonder how much of his being reserved stems from him not seeing himself as a "guitarist first" for so long. I think it was the Fuse interview where he mentioned when they asked him to join that he had to think about it and decide if he could go to focusing on the guitar again, or something like that.

I think it sucks pretty hard. Not blaming the new guy because I haven't liked anything since californication and I only liked a few on that one. Even my 2yr old hates it and gets crabby when it comes on when the iPod is on random.

I disagree RockStarNick. I think all the catchy stuff throughout the songs i just completely missing. The whole Frusiante feel is completely gone from this album. That being said it's just alright for me with the new guy. Not bad, but definitely wouldn't really even consider it Chili Peppers.
