Who played the first pinch harmonic?

We all know Billy Gibbons (or Steve Hackett, or EVH, or insert name here) invented right hand finger tapping for rock guitar. Who invented the pinch harmonic? I did a Google search and say Roy Buchanan's name. Is this right? Does anyone know? Kind of strange how something that probably sounded like a mistake the first time someone did it became so accepted with the advent of overdriven guitar.

A lot of what Roy did sounded odd to a lot of people when they first heard it, but for someone who never became a star, it's amazing how influential he was on the entire genre.

When GP mag was tracking down that stuff, I think they concluded that right-hand tapping was first seen by some 1920s jazz guitarist not generally known for anything else (hence my inability to remember his name).

Around that same time, I think I remember reading in GP that the first recorded pinch harmonic was done by ...Link Wray? Roy Buchanan? and they did laugh at first because they considered it an error. A producer overruled the player and the track was kept.

But hell, that was so long ago I don't know what I remember. :-0

(EDIT and note to self: Read the OP fully, next time)

Jim Campalongo sure wouldn't be the same player without Roy.

'Cause We've Ended As Lovers would be a very different song, if Beck would even have covered it at all.

Robert Johnson on August 15, 1938 at 11:47 PM. He said it wasn't intentional and called it a "screatch". Some other guitarist in the crowd corrected him and said it is a "pinch harmonic" and then went on to tell him that if his right hand technique was better, it wouldn't have happened. A fight ensued and the rest is, as they say, history.

If I had to put money on someone, it would be Roy...

Roy Smeck. Seriously, check him out on Youtube. One guy, one guitar, one slide. He sounded like he had an Eventide Harmonizer back in the 1920s...

Among rock era guitarists I think it could be Leslie West.

No-one knows who was the first guy to do a pinch harmonic, but I've always heard that the first recorded example was Roy Buchanan on "Potato Peeler" in 1962:

The first guitar player likely hit them a few times by mistake.
