Certainly not the radio.
There's a ton of bands on reverbnation.com Mostly small time stuff. Lots of it is actually pretty good. There's also ourstage.com

Luckily i live close enough to get WIIL rock 95.1 on my radio, they play the best music in my area. Haven't tried their web feed but it is worth while to check them out.

NPR! Between KCRW, KEXP, and All Songs Considered you can find a pretty good range of new music. They are not always right at the front of the trendiness curve, but that often means that the hype is toned down a bit.

Youtube, Message Boards, Sat Radio, TV Commercials and Shows, NPR.
Lots of good new music being featured in TV commercials. They have figured out that instead of recording and fast forwarding through commercials lots of people use that time instead to check out facebook/internet. So people are passive viewers of commercials with the TV on in the background. A good or interesting song will grab their attention away from the laptop or IPad. Depends on the programing though. A show(s) with a younger demographic will attract these type of commercials as opposed to sponsors of Meet the Press. Check it out and see for yourself. |

Actually, one of the best ways to find music, in my opinion, is to go on Amazon, find some bands you dig and then open up albums you like and they always have a lot of recommendations of bands who sound similar. I've found a ton of bands that way. You'll be surprised at how many cool bands you can find this way. They almost always have 30 second clips to listen and if it doesn't move you move onto the next one.

Obviously going out to see bands is the best way. Gigging with other bands is also great for this. We did a gig last night with two bands I hadn't seen (David Picco and Jeremy Porter & the Tucos), and left with three CDs. One is in my car now, and another is playing on my mp3 as I type. I believe a few of them have our CD too, so hopefully they are listening too.
