faux or real vibe pedal?

So I want to get a vibe pedal but I can't decide if I want a faux (Mofaux, Pickle, etc) or a Univibe clone (DejaVibe, MJM 60's vibe, etc.). I'm a hobbyist and I can't say I will use the pedal alot so I don't want to break the bank. However, I'm buying more boutique pedals and I'm worried that if I get a faux vibe I'll still be wanting the more realistic version. So what do you think? If you vote faux, what's the closest sounding to the Univibe? If you vote clone, which one do you prefer? I'm looking to spend between $100(faux)-200(clone), most likely buying used. Thanks for your help.

Check out the Jetter Vibe. Small compact and runs with 9 volts. The only reason I'm selling mine is that I need some cash.

Check out the Wilson Effects Haze vibe. I got one recently and it's really really great. It's easy on the wallet and sells new right in the price range you mentioned. Runs on standard 9V and is a more compact than the "real" ones too. I've read that the Pickle sounds too much like a phaser - never had one though.

Maybe spend 30 bucks and get a Danelectro Chicken Salad to see if its an effect you'll actually use?

I've got a Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe on my board and it sounds good to me! Not dirt cheap, not too expensive.

it's hard to make this call, because everybody's idea of what a vibe sounds like, and how it feels when you're playing it thru a loud amp at stage volume, versus in a bedroom, is completely different.

almost always, going for the 'real deal' is a decent payoff.

You should check out the VL Micro Vibe, wide range of vibe sounds, real vibe circuit, TB. The other small issue is a slight volume drop which can be fixed by JHS

I would say go with the real deal as well, otherwise you will be unhappy with it it. I've replaced a lot of effects because I compromised to save money, but the buying/selling/upgrading was more expensive than if I just bought the pedal I really wanted in the first place. Although, the Danelectro Cool Cat Vibe is a real vibe circuit, and it holds its own against my Fulltone (the Fulltone is a bit better though). Mine is slightly modded though (get rid of volume issue and delay in the effect coming on).

I still like my Pickle Vibe, and I've had it for 2-3 years. Sure, I wish I had a mini deja, but I don't use it all that much. The Pickle does a fairly good Jimi, or Gilmour. That's all I really need it to do. Love the price, and size, and I don't think it sounds bad. Yeah, you do get the phaser feel, especially in how it thins out your tone at certain parts of the throb. Here's a quick clip I made with an NKT275 Sunface, and Ethos. With a tele no less!

Dano Cool Cat vibe is great for $40... you can get it modded by KevinHiFi for another $40 and it sounds VERY close to the uni tones.

FWIW... I bought a Pickle and while it sounded good, it just wasn't close enough to the vibe sounds I wanted (DSOTM).

All of these are great suggestions. If you will always think about having a "real" one the Fulltone can be had used within your budget

Like others have mentioned a 'faux' vibe will be more phaser like. They can still sound good though.

Here's my take: I prefer the 'real deal', and I use a Fulltone MDV-2, which I'm very happy with. It has a great sound, and luckily, most modern vibes do also. Here's a 'trick' though. If you put a buffer, buffered pedal or even a small boost before a real vibe, it will sound more phaser like, bright and modern. This way, you can more or less get both sounds, authentic or 'faux'. I like it both ways, though it is a relatively subtle difference. A vibe will also sound very different depending on if it has dirt pedals before or after it. A lot of great stuff to choose from out there.

I've owned a bunch, and the fake ones don't sound nearly as good as the real ones to me. I didn't like the Voodoo Labs at all. The only fake one that I found passable was the Dunlop.

highly recommend the cool cat and the chicken salad.

MOST highly recommend a digitech ex7 . . . . even if it's just for the vibe . . . which it's not. it has a menu of killer sounds in there. . . . but the vibe is STELLAR.
