Can I unplug my speaker with the amp on standby?

Hoping for a quick answer to the question in the thread title.

I have two SFDRs and want to A/B them for the purpose of deciding which one to keep. I have a nice sounding speaker in one, and would like to play both amps through that. The speaker cable isn't long enough to pull out of amp A and plug into amp B.

I want to unplug the main speaker cable in both amps, and use a cable with alligator clips on one end to the speaker to the amps. And leave whatever amp I'm not plugged into on standby.

Alternatively, could I leave the amp A speaker connected normally, hook the alligator clips to the speaker and plug it into amp B, and just standby the one I am not playing through?

strato the answer to the title is yes as NJ indicated. But it is not entirely clear to me how you are planning on using aligator clips to hook the speaker to the amp. Are you pulling the chassis out to connect to the jack? Regardless, I would be a bit afraid on using aligator clips in case it comes loose hitting other wires inside the amp or coming loose and having no load (speaker) to the running amp. Best to get a speaker cable with female mono plug on one end and a male plug on the opposite end.

Thanks fellas. I thought so but always better to be sure.

BnR, clips go to speaker terminals, 1/4" male plug to speaker jack on amp.

I have gigged with one of these cables, they stay where you put them, if you put them on good.

Damage may result if you did that, eg flyback on the OT primary of the amp on standby.

Using aligator clips in the speaker circuit is a bad idea; sometimes they stay on good, sometimes they have a mind of their own and just won't. Intermittant open speaker circuits are a worst case scenario for OT flyback .

Well okay then, this will be called scenario A:

Since I will be at most 10 feet away from the amps, and the power switch, failure on the part of the alligator clips would result in a quick power down.

Any significant risk there?

Put 'em on good. It's a test. Be careful but not OCD.

You'll be fine.
