I think my body is hardwired with a threshold for number of hours I can sit in a cube
And every week, that's about 40. Most of the time, this works out kind of ok. This week, however, I've had to put in a bunch of extra time for a different client after my normal work day. It's 1:15PM on Friday and I'm just spent. Clearly, I have surpassed the threshold.
For what it's worth, this work is really hard (mentally, that is), and I don't think this makes me lazy, per se. I do nearly full-time hours as a musician too. I'm getting sick (stupid sinus infection) as well. So I'm stretched a little thin, and I haven't quite been able to get work off my mind when I'm not working. In fact, I'm dreaming in multidimensional expressions and data mining at night. FOUR MORE HOURS. Really makes me wonder about those folks who can continually put in 50-60 hours a week... even though I used to be one of them.

telecommuting saves my sanity.
When I dream of class inheritance or what the most efficient collection to utilize is, I know I'm working too much. The flip side though - we now work world wide, so there are times where I've got early morning meetings with europe and I can also "pass the baton" to malaysian folks. It's all good if you like what you do. I do. |

I had a limit of 40 hours as well. I worked hard to get my stuff done so I could go home and not think about it. When they asked me to join the dark side and be like them, working 7 days a week, 60-65 hours a week. That's 10 hours a day Monday - Friday, 5 hours a day saturday and sunday. During month closing, it was 11 hours a day, Mon-Fri. I said I had one question for them.
"How come you can't get your work done in 40 hours a week?" They did not like that. No, sir, they did not like that at all. Then I asked "Will I be salaried?" "Of course." "I see. Will I be getting a 62.5% wage increase commensurate with the increased amount of my time I'm putting in?" "What? No! You'll get the same amount you get per year as you do now." "You're asking me to work more than 50% of what I do already, and not get paid more money for it? You're essentially offering me a massive pay cut. That's over a 38% reduction in the value of my hours." They could not look me in the eye. "No, we're not cutting your pay, you'll get the same amount of money you make now." "Sure, for over half again as many hours. I don't think so. No, thanks."

That's a great way of putting it.

We weren't meant to work in cubicles, they are desensitizing. I'm glad I'm not in a cube anymore.

I've been sitting way too many hours in my chair lately. Just noticed that all the little aches and pains in my back exactly match the seam locations in my chair.

An office cube feels very much like solitary confinement. Thankfully, I don't have an office job any more.

You joke about it being "hardwired" but it kinda is. During the first part of the 20th century a lot of efficiency studies were done in factories, because owners weren't getting linear returns for more hours worked. No matter what they changed, the law of diminishing returns always kicked in around 36 hrs a week and 8 hour shifts.

yeah, it's the hours spent in the cube, not just the hours.

They're better than open office environments.

You beat me too it. I'll take a cube over an open office any day.
It always cracks me up how the same execs that force open offices are always the ones coming in telling everyone to be quiet. What did they think would happen? Open office is nothing more than "I don't think you're actually working, and I want to be able to see what you're doing at all times.

Both of my clients right now are doing the open office thing, although I have a half cube at one of them... still weirds me out that someone else literally faces the back of my head while she works. Thankfully I'm out of there in a few weeks though. Also sort of funny because all the work is SSAS, so the word 'cube' comes up there only maybe eleventy billion times a day.
