Just bought a OD2r used with matching 1x12". I think it is #10.

It arrives tommorow, I can't wait! I have some NOS RCA blackplate 6L6s I am gonna pop in there.

an anybody suggest a good reverb pedal that works well out in front of the amp, since the OD2r doesn't have an effects loop?

Nothing
And it hasn't got a thing to do with amp brand etc.
Time based FX sound horrible in front of OD.
Send it to Alan and have a FX loop put on that amp, you won't regret it.

Alan can also upgrade to the latest specs... including the OD3r i believe.

Hmmm, so does that mean I bought a sub-par amp? Is there a specific reason the loop was left out? Do OD2r users just not play with time based effects?
I can send it in, but I live out west so I'd have to ship the head across country so it's not a real cheap option.

I generally play with vintage fender amps and am happy with how my modulation/time pedals sound out in front, and of course fenders spring reverb sounds nice though I play it just barely in, not surf guitar style.

Thanks for your input, I'm still really excited to receive this amp today!

a friend of mine told me he was using two cabs with his CA. 1) 8 ohm and 1) 16 ohm and hooking them up to the corresponding 8 & 16 speaker outs on the head.

Is this the correct way to hook these up or will it harm the amp?

The "r" stands for recording. Effects loops can be used in tracking but there are other, arguably better, ways to go in the studio. People ended up using the OD2r for live use so a demand was created for an effects loop.

As I recall, retrofitting the OD2r with an effects loop is one of Alan's favorite activities.

Hi Lambone, congrats. Definitely not a sub-par amp! (I'm a relatively new OD3r owner).

The early OD2r had no loop as they were designed primarily for low noise recording / studio applications (Alan can confirm).

Ideal scenario is getting upgraded, of course.

However, if you can't or don't get loop, you can still try reverb out in front (w clean channel). Maybe analog delay is way to go (if you need efx in front)?

Thanks, yeah I use an Analogman delay that I like.

Btw- by sub-par I didn't mean to imply lacking in quality, I just meant lacking in features I may need for gigging. I know these amps are the some of the best available, I've done a lot of research!

We'll see if I can live without the loop, if not I suppose it will eventually find it's way back to Alan for the mod. Perhaps I can live without reverb altogether, it's usually hard to discern in a band mix anyway.

Try it out and make your own decision. Although the people who frequent the CA thread are among Themistocles knowledgeable, TGP is all too full of Father Knows Best types. Let YOUR ears make the decision.

Yes, you may be perfectly happy with your effects on the front end of the amp. It's a great amp as it sits now. Let your ears decide, especially in a gig where noise is all over the place anyways.

I had a no looper ....killer sounding amp .....put a boost up front and ur about the same as a later model....I'm sure you could get a loop put in for low dollars out west .. I did eventually move to a 2r looper with boost......will be sending her in for the 3r mod......... I would highly recommend getting the 3r chizzy done to it as it will have no equal and well worth the bucks!

or
hotplate=250 used
tech 21 power engine = 250 used

hotplate between head and dry cab
line out of hotplate to fx
fx out to tech 21 for wet cab

= wet/dry rig with fx post amp
= more hassle but bigger clearer sound than mono/fx loop. imo.

It is true that if all you ned is a small amount of reverb that you may be fine without it all together. The OD series is quite 3D sounding on its own.
