That doesn't suprise me. I tend to favour darker voicing but the range is still there to get brightness out if you want it, but you will have to push the controls a bit higher than a Marshall. It falls short of the cut your head off treble though. I don't like that, The 2k spike that takes your eyes out if you're facing the cab. The mid control on the OD channel will also help to, it makes it almost wider as well. and bringing in some brighter upper mids.

Try a JJ ECC83 in V1 position and a TAD 7025 in the V2 position.

The latest JJ ECC83's are actually excellent and I've been using them a lot lately across several amp lines.

I don't know, though. Demos only seem to give the most general impression of what an amp can do. They always sound completely different when I play them!
I actually use Ch C in modern mode as a lead channel if that carrys any weight. Different guys set this amp up differently depending on their individual needs, but your thoughts were mine too and it can most certainly be used just like that and is designed as such.

For those that don't know, I put a speaker mounting stud through the edge of a cone on a brand new EV the other day....duh !! I've never done that before, though I must admit I've come close a couple of times. Very easy mistake to make, especially when you're not feeling great.
Good to hear you're feeling better. These things catchup with you. Please take good (or should I say better) care of yourself...

Regarding that EV, it could have been lot worse. Could be something causing personal injury. Whenever you work while sick and medicated you stand a chance to get in trouble. Count that up as a near-miss and hang the frame on your wall to remind you not to work when you're in similar states... One EV down perhaps but a lot more hurt spared. Its still a good day.

Hi Guys,
After going thru some major financial set backs due to health related expenses for both my son and myself last year I am back and finally in a position to concentrate on the things I enjoy most in life like my son and my music. I have been on board with Alan for the last 5 years or so and couldn't be happier with my amps. However my gigs have been scaled back to a point I'm only playing in churches that hold 100-200 people now. I love my 50watt amps master volume, but I am wondering if I'm playing clean 90% of the time if I would be better off playing a Trip R and OD3R. The cleans on my Tuc2 have been my favorite to date. I will never use more than a two amp set up. Would it be worth swapping out 2 of my 50watters for the R versions? Hmmmm.

Very happy to hear you and your son are doing better. Going through similar times myself so I understand very well. Priorities change so quickly. Glad its getting better for you though...

As for the R versions, IMHO, its not about the watts really... The MV on our 50 watters work so well we can still work with them at lower volume settings... Its perhaps the subtle circuit changes that go into the R versions for the front end and more importantly how the Cathode Bias vs Fixed Bias works for you at the output stage... I can see how both groups generate lots of loyal following but is it worth selling your 50 watters at a loss to buy the 'R series?

I was thinking about this the other day myself for the Triptik vs Trip'R and decided to sit on the Triptik for now. Its a 100W and I think I can use the lower watt version more efficiently but I don't want to get hit by the resale process...

I don't understand. If you're playing clean, then you may as well keep the watts, right?

Really looking at the tube configurations on the R series for the clean and as far as leads go if your using a lower volume you tend to sound less compressed playing thru a lower watt amp. When playing in venues that hold 500+ nothing sounds better to my ears than my 50watt TUC2 and for max headroom for clean the OD2 6L6 50watt is the king. IMHO.

Okay, I'm a rocker that grew up playin' Marshalls.
I played an OD-2 50 EL-34 for over two years.
I always set the treble at 3:00 or 4:00 and the presence at around 2:00, bass at 8:00/9:00 and mid at around 2:00 or so.
Sometimes I had the sparkle/bright switch on too.
I was using Mullard XF-2 EL-34's and stock pre'.

The OD-2 I owned was a bit dark compared to old Marshalls. Which is cool. I like the bite and crispness of the old Marshalls.

Alan is a very passionate guy. Both in his builds and taste.
Think Gary Moore. I know Alan has some of Gary in his amp's voicings. Aggressive yet smooth.

BTW, I doubt there is more of an expert on Marshall amps and what really makes them what they are than Alan.

Alan, thank you for answering the questions that were on my mind. I, like Sean, find there's a certain darkness there in my OD2 and was trying to find a solution to that, although that characteristic seems to be more in the OD channel. Glad you are feeling better. One question though. There seem to be a fewstyles of TAD 7025's - the 7025S, the 7025WA, and seemingly a regular 7025. Any reccomendation on which to acquire?
Thanks.

For brightness on the OD2 I've found I get more if I run the input volume higher instead of the gain on channel B. That's if I want that sound.
