What do you look for in wood grain on bodies?

Lets say when you are picking out wood for a build from the Warmoth body site or from the lumber yard.
what do you look for??

Straight grain lines?
Well defined lines?
Tight grain lines or more widely spaced? ( would that make the wood brighter or more mellow?)

what are some rules of thumb?

or are there absolutely none??
and you go by weight alone?

cheers!

Interesting wood grain was my number one factor when I bought my warmoth. Second was weight of the body (lighter the better for me).

I'm not much of a believer that tighter grain will give you a better sound or anything like that

It depends on the type of guitar. On Strats I like a grain that kind of follows the contour of the body to a degree. There is nothing like a swamp ash strat where the grain kind of mimics the contour of the body on both halves if it is a 2 piece body.
