Hi all from a newbie and your advice needed

Hi all,

I have been coming to this site frequently to look for info on gear. Great source thanks to all of you.

I was wandering if you could advise on the following . . .

I am looking into copressor pedals. Never had one before, but read a lot here. However, I can't try them all, but I am interested in Mad Professor BFG or Wampler Ego Comp. I will try MP this weekend but do not have the chance to try Wampler. If anybody truied them both which one would be considered "warmer" (can't find the better word but I gues you know what I mean)?

Or Keeley is better in that sense (I like John Mayer's sound - Belief Abbey Road version).

Thank you all for input.

I can't help too much as of those I have only tried the Wampler. (Mine is the older larger box version). What I would say though is one feature I really like on the Wampler is the Blend knob, which allows you to blend the clean signal in with the compressed signal. Very useful control to have on a compressor. No idea if the bfg has a blend knob and your application may make this feature redundant, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I've never used their compressors, but I can say from experience that Wampler & Keeley both make top notch stuff.

I adore my Keeley. The only compressor I have considered replacing it with—and I've looked closely at all the TGP "darling" compressors including Wampler, Diamond, and Empress—is the Effectrode. I might make the switch next year, but there definitely isn't anything driving me away from the Keeley. It's like the Apple of compressors: It just works.

I agree with 100JH above. Check out OVNI. There are a ton of reviews, informative and well-written and (as far as I can tell) unbiased. Short of actually playing through all the different pedals yourself, that's the best start to deciding on your own which compressor will fit your needs.

between the mp fgc and the mp fgc (circuit board-less expensive version), I choose the mp fgc cb. It is quieter to my ears, and sounds as close to the bjfe pgc as anything I have heard. I have been through a lot of compressors. The opto compressors all are great, but do not have the sonic enhancement I am always looking for after having a bjfe pgc. The wampler is pretty darn good imo.
I also like the aanlogman bicomprossor. (ross and orange squeeze compressor in one pedal). I do not think you can go wrong with the mp fgc for the price. good luck.

Hello.

It all depends on what guitar you have, what amp & speaker/s you have, and what other effects in your signal chain you have.

I have Strat with SD SSL's, Ibanez with Dimarzio's and Jackson also with Duncan's. Looking for comp mainly for the Strat and while some I tried were ok they were more on the bright side. I would like something more darker/warmer but with clarity.

Other pedals are Suhr Riot, Boss DD3, Earthquaker Ghost Reverb (just bought this one waiting for delivery), Morley BH2 wah and Boss GT-10.

Edit - I forgot the Trex Moller and Machine head 72degrees overdrives.

Amp is Peavey Bandit. No plans for upgrade there.

if you are looking more for a John Mayer kind of compression. I go with something like a Diamond (optical compression)....where you maintain you clarity as well as your tone, and almost can't tell it is on. It has an EQ knob so you can tailor how warm you want it.

It is a compressor that you can can use on Single coils or Buckers equally well.
