Any love for Jimmy Herring?

With all the discussion of Jerry Garcia, Trey Anastacio, and Warren Haynes, I'm suprised that I don't hear more discussion of fellow jam band guitarist Jimmy Herring of Widespread Panic.

I caught them on ACL recently, and was really impressed with the guy.

What say you?

Lifeboat is one of my most favorite CD's I own. I love his solo work and wish he would do more. Jimmy rocking his Fuchs is something to behold.

I think Jimmy's awesome, his short-lived project with Derek Trucks, Frogwings, was something different but their playing on that is great. Jazz is Dead is always a treat to listen to, and an often-overlooked Herring project. His solo album Lifeboat is a different take on jazz guitar but I think it's pretty damn good FWIW. He did a few columns for GP and GW a couple years back which explain some of Jimmy's techniques. His GP Master Class back in '08 is still on my practice schedule because it's full of neat ideas and licks one could expand greatly upon.

All that aside, I dig Jimmy Herring.

I think you'll find a LOT of love here for JH.

Great player and a super nice guy too.

I'm not a huge fan of WSP and actually prefer his playing with Jazz Is Dead, ARU or better still, his own band-check out his solo CD 'Lifeboat' if you haven't already heard it, amazing stuff!!

Just fyi, the new issue of Guitar Player magazine has an in-depth analysis of Jimmy's playing style.

I never really heard of him before a couple months ago. A friend asked if I could put together a double humbucker Strat like Jimmy Herring's... I said "Who?" I had to YouTube him and liked what I heard.

And built a guitar for my friend.

Not a jam band guy but I've seen Jimmy a few times and the man can flat out wail. Great musician.

I am a jam band guy... But the only solo herring I've sampled is a recent fusion record. Any guidance on his other recordings?

Jazz is Dead is incredible all around and a solid jamband place to start with Jimmy. If you can find his sit-ins with Phish from the "at the roxy" box set from '93 the Funky Bitch is epic!

Any recent WSP show is killer, my favorites are 4/1 from Louisville, the recent Boston shows, and Halloween are great.

I'll second this opinon on Lifeboard as well as the Jazz is Dead albums.

Personally I think he's coming from a completely different place than Garcia so I'm not sure a comparison is valid

Another one coming first half next year. Panic is taking a year off and Jimmy is focusing on the solo stuff. A tour should be coming, and possibly some collaborations with some jazz heavyweights too.
