Amp Distress... Please Help.

Hi all,

I will start up front by saying I have very little knowledge of the inner workings of tube amps. However, I have replaced both tubes in my AC4TV and even taken the thing in to the shop where I bought it so that it could be tested, and they told me there was nothing wrong with it. Needless to say, the guys at the local shop are not trustworthy. When I play a note on any guitar through this amp, and just sustain the note, there is an awful glassy/metallic ringing coming through the speaker. I'm not talking about one of the screws or grommets being loose, because I've checked that... it's coming through the speaker for sure. Could the tubes be vibrating against their sockets? Is there another part that might be to blame? Really need some help on this one because it's preventing me from enjoying my electric guitar.

Thanks!

I've had EL84 tubes rattle like that in a combo, it was actually internal to the tube itself. Putting small heat-resistant rubber rings on them as dampers helped alot. JJ EL84s are very durable and might hold up better for you.

Also, if the amp has a speaker out you could try another cabinet and determine whether the problem might be speaker or cab-rattle related...

Sounds like a microphonic tube. It could also be the tube socket.

It sounds like a microphonic tube to me also. It could be the tube itself or as Trebor stated, the socket is loose. Very common in combos I guess, I'm having issues with this in my combo as I type.

Microphonic tube. Could be either preamp or power tube. Tap on each tube and you'll find out which one it is.

Thanks everybody. I've done some research on the web, and a microphonic tube is exactly what is going on. That sucks as these are both new tubes. Oh well, I guess it's time to get out the ol' wallet and grab some new ones!

You shouldn't have to buy a new pre-amp and a new power tube... one assumes the pre-amp tube was the one that had gone microphonic.
