Who here gigs with a Tungsten Crema Wheat?
I'm gigging my new (to me) Crema Wheat tonight for the first time, and wondered if anyone here has one that they also gig with?
If so, opinions of the CW in a gigging situation are welcome.

Hi, I wouldn't call it gigging, however I play my crema wheat at the local Blues Jam in Boulder, CO at the Outlook hotel. I usually get about 3-4 songs in. I play a Gibson Historic Plaintop R0 straight in. I go in the bright channel one and turn up to about 2 O'Clock. It is never super clean. It will clean up if I lighten up and play some 5th's or something. I just roll up the volume for soloing and it rips.
It takes care of business for sure and is so portable. I love that. Very direct great tone. I just got a Buckwheat combo too. I wanted it for more clean. From what I hear so far the Buckwheat does not have a whole lot more clean head room and I think the Crema is a bit "juicier" if that means anything. The Buckwheat is a bit stouter but not by much IMO. Last edited by tch2112; 11-28-2011 at 06:55 PM. |

I'm gigging with mine. Rattles for sure but doesn't bother me. I do find some difficulty in establishing the right volume. Last gig I had it on a stand about waist height and couldn't get the volume over 3 before the sound man told me to turn it down. Once we started playing, I wished it was on the floor because it was the only thing I could hear! It really projects, that's for sure.
This was in portland's best sounding club (the Doug fir) and my friends told me it sounded amazing over the mains. So I guess I'm still trying to figure out where to run it. I like the sound best when it's around 5 +, but haven't been on a stage where I could go that loud. And yet, it's not THAT loud; I can imagine some scenarios where it wouldn't be enough. If I sound like I'm confused it's because I am. ![]() Love the sound of this amp! |

I no longer have my CW, but I did many gigs with mine. I solved the rattles by attaching the softer side of velcro, cut into strips, any place where the chassis met the cabinet, and between the back panels and the cabinet. After that, no rattles at all.
After a few gigs with the Scumback speaker, I replaced it with a much louder Eminence Wizard. I had more than enough headroom with that speaker and it sounded really good too. Worked great with pedals. The CW is a great amp for cranking the amp volume and using your guitar volume to go from clean to dirty, though due to the music I play on gigs, I didn't use it that way. wow... this is the first I've heard of the CW being a bad "rattler"...
No rattles in the GregV demos! (I honestly don't know if they would come thru in the video)

Most of the times, the rattles in combo amps are noticeable when playing alone in your basement. Once you play with a whole band(not mic'ing the amp) it will be all about how the amp can cut through the mix.

Amp gigs very well in my opinion.
Plenty of volume on tap and very receptive to the volume knob of the guitar. It is a tweed variant and not blackface, if you want really clean then it's not for you......having said that, it does clean up fairly well though....for a tweedish amp. |

Rattles are sort of nature of the beast with a Tweed build. The back panel can rattle a bit against the chassis (stick a pick in it) tighten up baffle screws, and use a good Nos recto and power tubes. The new tube stuff goes 'rattler' fast in near any combo.

No rattles from mine either. You guys with rattles do know how to use a screwdriver, right?
