Good, affordable tech in San Francisco

Can anyone recommend a solid tech that I can afford on a budget? My G&L could use a little bit of love.

I know of orbiter guitars in San Leandro, but it's a bit far from the sunset district in SF, not to mention an extra $40 after two trips out there.

not sure about the affordable part...LOL... but I would trust my guitars to no one but Gary Brawer, 15 Lafayette near Mission and Van Ness.

Yeah, Gary is definitely not affordable, but you can do that when you have the likes of Satriani and Schon as regular customers.

You may want to give SF Guitarworks in Potero a call, if the work is straightforward and the G&L not "collectible/vintage", I would have no problem with them doing this kind of work for me.

We are all missing Rich Collopy.

There's a guy at Noe Valley music on 24th st you might want to check out. He builds his own guitars. Not sure what he charges but you can always ask him.

Brawer and his crew have always given me top-notch treatment and impeccable work over the past 20 years, regardless of the state of my chops or wallet.

Good, fast or cheap; you might get two, you won't get all three in most business exchanges.

I've been using Gary Brawer. He's been non-judgmental when I've come into his shop with some hare-brained plan and he treats noobs with the same courtesy that he does rock stars. He's stayed late to complete a setup when he's known that I have to have the guitar *that night.* The work's always been excellent, and I think his prices are fair.

Sorry to be the bearer of negativity, but I've had 3 separate re-wiring jobs done at SF Guitar Works and they now all need to be redone.

Not going back...

I too am a Gary Brawer guy. He made my tele play unbelievably well. The intonation is as good as it gets. It has .010 gauge strings on it, but it plays like it has .009's. Every person that has played it has walked away muttering to themselves, "Stupid Lance. Why the heck doesn't me tele play like that?"
