NGD (soon): Collings 290 w/Bigsby

I went down to the Collings fall gathering with my buddy, Dale, and the rest of our band. It was a fun trip and the second time we've gone. Dale has a bunch of Collings acoustics and a mandolin or two (along with a couple of electrics) and I figured I'd try out all of the Collings guitars at Hill Country Guitars that had a Bigsby (trems are important for what I like to do). I was looking real hard at a 360 thinking it would be just what I was looking for. I tried out the more expensive SoCo models and the I-35's (which wasn't quite what I was looking for either) but, on a whim, tried out the 290 that was hanging on the wall thinking I wouldn't care for it quite as much.

When I plugged it into a Fender Deluxe that was sitting in the back room, though, (the same amp I tried all the others through) I was shocked by how much I loved the variety of tones coming out of that guitar. It was solidly built, just like you'd expect from any other Collings product, but the TONES. Wow! It had a couple of TV Jones Filtertrons on it that made the notes sustain and swell and.... And the Bigsby was just solid with the implementation being a little bit further off the top than I had seen on some other guitars (a good thing) making it easy to grab hold of. I can't complain about the doghair finish either, which I think is relatively unique.

It's being shipped to me this week but below are a few photos from the Hill Country Guitars website. Can't wait to play my first gig with it.

dude:

A Total Score. Enjoy it and play the shizzle out of it.

It was a blast to hang with you and the boys...a lot of fun pickin'. I'm certain that a "plugged" jam might be even more fun than the "unplugged" Gathering...if that is humanly possible.

Be well and say howdy to Dale and the boys from Clem.

Beautiful!
I would have thought they had a different name for it as it has Filtertrons and not P90's.

There should be a Federal Law stating that every Filtertron Guitar MUST have a Bigsby.

ENJOY!!

I really like the doghair finish, seeing it on Grosh and some others as well- white fill with trans black I guess is all it is, very classy.
