ohms and watts

I am only most of the way through the first thread, so this may have been discussed. If so sorry. If not, it seems like a good question.

The Tweaker is 15 watts into 16 ohms.

Wouldn't it produce more watts going into 8 ohms. (or at least more volume)

The Tweaker 15 is 15 watts into 16/8/4 ohms. There is a selector switch on the back.

It's TGP.

A fairly significant percentage of this forum's audience have a serious gear ADD problem, and the money to support the endless cycle of gear swapping. More power to 'em, but don't try to judge the quality of any amp by how many are available for sale in the emporium.

I think even some of the participants in these Tweaker threads who have raved about their Tweakers have ended up selling them.

It's not because they stopped loving the Tweaker tone, it's because in true TGP fashion, there was always another amp out there, promising that perfect tonal bliss that always seems to remain somewhere over the horizon, just out of reach.
Yes and I've observed that by and large the tonal bliss sought by most (not all) on TGP is a dark smooth overdrive...nothing with some sizzle or electricity...so I have to keep that in mind when reading the raves about things....

Yeah, I shouldn't have said it's silly not to keep one. Some guys only have one or two amps and have something specific that they need, and maybe a real Fender and a real Marshall (or insert your preference here) is better for them. I agree. Just saying, having one amp that can cover that many tones well, for a guy who has 3-4 amps and wants to go play somewhere and do some of the tones of all three... or for a guy who wants a nice Marshally tone but doesn't want to haul his full stack to a smaller gig.... or a guy who doesn't want to haul his boutique amp to an outdoor gig... and there are a bunch of other "etc. etc." where the Tweaker is just a good amp to keep around, even if it's not your "best" amp or your "main" amp.

Plus, I got mine on sale at GC for 20% off. For under $350 (!) this amp is pretty darn good. I have 6-7 amps. (Been trying out some lower powered tube amps lately since that fits better with the gigs I do). Unless I was getting another higher end amp and really needed the cash from the Tweaker in order to buy the new one, for me it would be very hard to justify selling it.

I have my eye on a Mini Rec but won't sell the Tweaker if I get one. I'll just get a bigger music room. :-)

Thats the best idea yet.
Im keeping the Tweaker 15 because A: Im done hauling my Laney GH50 and 4x12 outta for anything other than the rare unmiked affair.
And B: It covers my tone pallets pretty well.
I like British like crunch and gains and Fender like cleans and the Tweaker hits them all pretty good and in true tube character I might add.
Its as easy too haul as my Rack modeler and its amp/monitor.
And Im always miked so honestly I dont need anything larger and my old back is much happier these days.
But hey Egnaters arent for everyone.

I keep wrestling with this kind of thing too. I actually have had possession of both the TA15 and the TA30, with the intention of selling my Tweaker once I settled into them. The TransAtlantics got sent back, and the Tweaker stayed. In the end the Tweaker sounded better to my ears. I really tried too, I'm a Mesa guy and the whole thing. The Tweaker just was easier to deal with.

Now I'm doing comps between the Mini Rec and the Dual Terror. But I suspect that the result is going to be the same: they just won't be better enough to warrant the outlay.

If the Tweaker were my main amp, it might be different; but it's not (my Lone Star is still the go-to), so at this point it's just fantasy. And even if I were using the lunchbox as my main rig, so far none of the other contenders has made a serious run at it.

I too have been a Mesa guy for over 20 years, and the Tweaker just seems to fit me better. Great tone (for me), light weight, pretty easy to deal with. Still looking at a 5:50 express head down the line, but until then the Tweaker is my main performing amp.

To jump back to the Clean/Hot/Pedals topic.. Lately I've been finding that the Clean side with gain set around 2:00 gives me a nice squishy tone when I really dig in to chords and bluesy leads. I'm favoring this style of playing lately over high gain/speed/shred (and DON'T call me lazy!), but it's still fun to delve into that realm occasionally.

That being said, anyone have OD pedal recommendations to give me that extra boost of gain to get into legato/shred land? Like I said.. even though I probably sound better playing the blues with conviction, I do enjoy practicing running scales and drifting into Dream Theater territory once in a while.

Fulltone OCD (which I know is hit/miss depending what amp you're using) works really well with the Tweaker. As does my Keeley DS-1. Just ordered an MXR Custom Badass Modified OD for a bit of variety, looking forward to seeing how that one works.

That said, I'm running my gain a LOT lower than you are - plenty of clean headroom going on with my Tweakers

Martin- I'll take your word for it, sir. I've noticed in your clips you tend to do humbuckers with a 5-way switch deal, which is similar to my setup. I'm sure pickups have to do with the characteristics of OD tone just as much as the pedal and the amp do.

If I can add to my scenario: I run the Tweaker 15 head with a G-Major in the loop for volume control and effects, and am looking for an OD pedal to put in front of the Tweaker's clean side with the gain set between 12:00-2:00.

Thanks for everyone's feedback

Barber LTD v2 works real nice for me, for smoother leads.

My experience has been that if you prefer to run the Clean channel but like the OD sound of the Hot side of the amp, the OCD is the way to go. Set right it can sound just like flipping the clean/hot switch. All the other OD pedals I've tried add their own coloring to the sound.

The OCD is awesome with the Tweaker! But it is very open and dynamic. If you want smoother, more singing lead tone, a screamer type pedal or the LTD is better. (IMHO!) Unless of course, you crank the gain up on the OCD. Then it does compress some. I've got a Keeley modded TS9 that does this very well! A Barber Unlimited would KILL for going from squeaky clean to singing lead tones!
