Lightbulb Favorite TGP Post EVER~Should be a Sticky (IMHO)

This is certainly 'Torn from the Heart" ~ Addressing Myopic Viewpoints about the State of Music.
Thank you Splatt (David Torn) ..

Look at Splatt's references to the OP as directly related to anyone who
chooses not to open themselves to by directly criticising the extremely active world of music currently moving full steam ahead these days ...

the music-related "problems" he blames on the external world are, afaict, utterly internal
--- his own personal problems ---
and are not, in any way, the "fault" of external forces.

as well,
a subject like this, stated as such,
appears as a semi-conscious, backhanded & nasty-assed slap-in-the-face to the many, many musicians
who continue to attempt to sincerely create music w/intention, much hard work &
no small amount of personal "sacrifice".

but, in that regard:
he's really only addressing what he perceives of a very narrow band of stylised "music"-idioms,
music that he once-upon-a-time enjoyed.

so.
he can't just go to his old record-shop & casually sort through physically-exciting "product"
as once he did, but
--- on the other side of the same coin ---
he clearly loves using the internet,
but seems unwilling to (or, incapable-of!) sort(ing) through both its vastness & the overwhelm of other media
in order to find things he might enjoy.....

iow:
he seems to want for some "groundbreaking POP music" to be handed to him on a phreaking plate,
as it once was by the unbridled intensity of the old-school-scattershot--marketing-machine,
all the while wanting said "groundbreaking POP music" to deeply remind him of music
that he truly believed to be "groundbreaking POP music", from within his own, probably very limited, listening-past.

he is clearly shackled- & frustrated-by by his own attachments to that past,
& remains only tauntingly enticed by the siren of the internet's possibilities:
straight-up option anxiety,
amplified by the apparent need to exert some amount of regular effort.....
..... even on his own behalf.

none of which really makes any sense to me, at all.

some folks have been positively suggesting new music, here on TGP, for years.....
..... but, me?
i'm not doing that, anymore;
that's over, for me.
those threads disappear like dew under the desert sun,
and everything here seems to engender some truly adolescent,
armchair-and/or-bitter-agenda-wielding arguments.

there have been, & probably will continue to be,
some regular "voices in the wilderness", on TGP, in waves:
some respectable (imo) tilting at musical windmills,
some stumping for musical quality & that very specific,
non-idiomatic actual striving-for-personal-expression.

in this particular increasingly "YouTube-commentary"-like environment,
at this point, i'll finally say:

i don't know you, OP.
i don't know your tastes, what you may or may not be "open" to.
this is your personal problem..... not mine.
please do figure it out for yourself;
no-one else is gonna undo & untangle your interiorised dilemma.

i remain satisfied in finding new (& old, & far-flung) music, daily,
and continuing to attempt to make music for which i might harbor some respect.

Absolutely. Sometimes it seems some simply do not want to make a continued effort to move beyond their own generation.

I have found more awesome music in the past 10 years than in my first 30...all thanks to the internet. Music from every era and every country...

I agree with Torn on all points above... it's out there and it's as simple as you finding it. Get off your ass and find it... or better yet... MAKE IT!

Sheesh!

Torn up?

He's 100.9% correct. Everything that has ever been recorded and released in the past is out there for you to discover, and the world's current musicians are creating new music daily. What's even more positive for current musicians is that they can take what has come before, and learn (or steal) from it however they choose.

It's out there. Make some effort and find it....or even better, create it yourself.

the OP is what I have tried to say, inartfully, for years. Perfect summation.

There is more brilliant new music out there today than there has ever been. It's frustrating to know that that music could sit on the faces of most of its naysayers and they will refuse to recognize its brilliance due to the fact that it is, ipso facto, not OLD MUSIC.

Screw those guys.

Oh, and you run into immeasurably fewer of those guys in jazz circles. Weird, huh? Kinda like how it's so rare for people to criticize technical proficiency in jazz or classical music. I'm betting these are all rooted in a general closed-mindedness that we're TOLD doesn't characterize rock music and its fans.

I don't think it's much of a post at all.

What does it say other than things about taste.

No matter how anybody cuts it there has not been much that sounds like a new thing in popular music for ages because it's all been done.

There is no thing like Reggae waiting around the corner for anyone to explore the way the Police did for example, so forget it.

All that's going on now has been going on for ages.

Same old Cookie Monster vocals, the same old rehashed 60s stuff etc etc.

That's probably ok to someone who doesn't have any past reference points.

I think there are still some good musicians and even songwriters around now but there is nothing new in general going on.

The Police were the ones to explore Reggae?
