HD500 patch tweak. Late to the party with these tricks but: WOW!

I read some time ago about a few things a certain Mr Glenn Delaune was doing with his HD500 patches. 2 things in particular...

1. The use of 2 delays and lose the verb.
2. Setting up the Wah to sound more realistic.

Well I must say, I gigged the new patches last night and what a difference. Easily the best Wah sound I've found and I hadn't realised just how muddy some verbs can make your tone, untill I lost em altogether in favour of Glenn's idea to use 2 delays.

There was much more clarity in my tone. I could here the individual notes that much clearer. Just an all round much better sound. Definately worth having at look at imo.

See screen shot below for what he does...

The 20ms Digital delay goes in front of the amp and the 470ms Ping Pong goes after. I don't have the facility to record just yet to give you a demo of my patch, but I contacted TGP forumer GuitarTone (Lance) who I happen to know uses the same delay set-up, to ask his permission to use his demos. Both these demos will give you an idea of how the delays sound.

Glenn's vid on how to set up your Wah...around 3.30.

Set input 1 to guitar and input 2 to Variax. It will sound even better.

Is that definately?

I've read it, but wasn't sure whether it was worth doing or not.

I set quite a few patches to Variax on input 2 (along with other tweaks) and I didn't like what I heard. I'm more than happy to accept it was the other tweaks which were to blame, but I am a self confessed shite tweaker, so I just up loaded my previous bundle through HD Edit.

If setting input 2 to Variax is definately gonna be an improvement, then I will implement it on all patches. Except dual amp patches, so I read?

When you have input 1 set to Guitar+aux+variax and input 2 the same, it doubles the noise. By setting 1 to guitar and 2 to variax (because you only plug your guitar into 1) you get a lot less hiss and noise.

Fair enough. Then I shall give it another whirl. I'm out Fri, Sat and Sun next week, so I'll alter some patches and see how they work out.

Cheers

I used to use the 20ms delay a ton back when I used my M9 a ton. It really thickens up your tone and the delay isn't noticable

That works for me. I definitely heard a big difference after using the 2 delays and ditching the verb. I didn't realise the 20ms delay could have such an effect on my tone. I certainly would never have come up with that idea myself.

As I've said before, I ain't the best tweaker, but I believe my ears can tell the difference when I hear what I like.

My tone just fely more alive somehow. More like a proper tube amp if you will. To be honest I believed L6 had implemented changes they didn't tell us about in the 1.4 update, but Rich has categorically denied that, so it must be the delays and lack of verb.

I couldn't tell you which elements of adding those particular delays and ditching the verb made the most difference, but It was a big improvement to my ears.

The screenshot above shows a dual amp setup. I always though I had to set both inputs to 'Guitar' for that to be enabled in dual tone mode,.

If I am wrong I will, go by setting 1 to guitar and 2 to variax (because you only plug your guitar into 1)

Can someone verifiy that setup works even when using Dual Tones on my HD500.

thanks, Mark

The screenshot patch has input 2 set to same. I heard at first that in a dual amp patch input 2 needed to stay set to same, but I have since read that you can route a dual amp patch in a certain way and set input 2 to Variax. I can't remember how this is done. Hopefully someone will chime in and enlighten us.

I'm not in front of my HD500 right now, but I believe if you put a mono effect in the "Pre" section (before the dual amps), it will sum the signal to mono and will work fine as long as that effect is turned on. Even if you have Input 1 set to Guitar and Input 2 set to Variax.
