Orange Dual Terror and TH30...no idea how they sound so different...

I used to own an Orange Dual Terror (about a year ago) and I just bought (two days ago) an Orange TH30. On paper one might think that these are the same amp. They both run 4 EL84 power tubes and 4EEC83 preamp tubes. Althought the TH30 has a dedicated clean channel and an effects loop I am mainly comparing the dirty channels.

For comparison I will relate these amps to the style of music that each amp excels at (in my opinion).

Dual Terror.....think Clutch, AC/DC, Rage against the Machine. (more of an extreme crunch)
TH30.............think Slayer, Corrosion of Conformity (extreme metal)

I am trying to decide which sound I prefer. My band has been described as "Clutch wannabe's" so I guess I prefer the sound of the Dual Terror.

The TH30 (after only two days of playing it) does the thrash metal thing very well. The clean channel on the TH30 is surprisingly good as well.

Band practice Thursday will determine if the TH30 is a keeper.

Yeah it's quite a different amp to the TT/Dual Terror! It's basically a metal amp with a Bassman like clean ch...but...it can still easily do the TT sound IMHO which is also a surprise.

Here's couple of ideas to get the Dual Terror sound. Drop the wattage (down to 2 tubes and even 7 watts) and crank the clean ch...you will be surprised at how crunchy this gets! It just goes off at 3/4 etc! Also push the master right up (max) on the dirt ch and just use a gain to add enough volume/crunch...also use the wattage/tube selector. I find I can get a pretty convincing TT sound like this.

Jimmy, can't you just back off the vol knob or the gain on the amp for a lighter non metal crunch?

I had a Tiny Terror (im 98% sure its the same same OD as the dual terror) and i know its a 1 trick pony, but i liked the OD on my boogie closed back 2x12 (V 30s) it sounded really nice

The TH30 was nice but it was a bit more compressed and modern sounding, (im not saying it as a bad thing) but just my observation. I think i liked the Tiny terror od chanel a bit more, it seemed to "bloom more and open up' a lil more when pushed. If i wanted a more modern tone i would hit it with a pedal and be right there

I would be happy with either (TH30 has a nice clean and a loop) its all what fits your needs

It seems like the dirty channel gain knob is an all or nothing proposition.
With the gain knob around 10 o'clock you get a very quiet dirty clean but without the punch that kicks in around the 12 o'clock mark on the dial.
The better option is to use the clean channel at 7 watts and crank the volume giving you a very punchy, girthy crunch but it's not for bedroom practice. By this point you are loud as hell.

Check out 3:30 with the gain @ 11 and the master pushed - that's very DT/TT like. For light crunch I just push the clean ch or roll the gain back slightly on the gain ch with the master on 10.
