I shipped a heavy VHT amp head to Canada once. It wasn't a big deal however the buyer had to pay a big fee to pick it up I believe

I had someone on ebay who wanted me to ship a pedal to a third-party for export. I looked closer at the address, and got a few hits that led me to believe the whole thing smelled. To obtain my pedal free of charge, all he had to do was claim he never received it when filing his paypal claim.

I declined his offer. I think you got lucky.

I have no problem shipping internationally as long as the buyer is willing to pick up the additional shipping charges and acknowledges in an e-mail that I will not be responsible for any delays or damages caused by customs. Also, if they choose to ship via USPS, they do so willingly despite the limited amount of insurance that can be purchased for international shipments.

I totally understand the OP's gripe, though. Living in Hawaii, we buyers have to put with the whole "will not ship to Alaska and Hawaii" statement. I stick by the belief that an item being shipped from New York to California, stands the same chance of being damaged as it does going from New York to Hawaii. The main thing is packaging! Package it well and the item will be safe, regardless of where it's being shipped. I ship artwork to clients all the time on the mainland, as well as selling guitar gear, and they always arrive safely because I pack the items well; really well.

Now, international customs is another issue. If they open up the box to inspect it and either damage and steal it, than the seller shouldn't be held responsible.

I can well understand "lazy" and "lame" when having to deal with burocracy, uncertainity etc.
I have bought new and expensive stuff from the US on 3 occations since '02 shipped Fedex, UPS and what have you, no problems.
There used to be and probably still is, some companies in the US that gives you an US address you can buy from and then ships the package to other countries than the US - never tried it and do not know their names etc, but some creative googling should help you find those. I would look into that if I wanted to buy something from a CONUS only seller - less pain except for the overhead.

.
I spent three days in Dublin ten years ago. I have never tasted anything like the Guinness that is rolled straight out of the factory to the local taps. The Guinness here in the US doesn't even resemble it. If I had spent another week in Dublin, I likely would have become an full-blown alcoholic!

Guinness is an aquired taste, though, like olives or 80%+ chocolate. Not everyone likes it over here. I don't know any girls that drink it at all. I'm sure there are some, but when I tried to get my sister to start drinking it, she pulled her nose up at it as if it were tripe or spunk. lol

Get yourself a Fedex/UPS account number.

I have shipped overseas before. By far the easiest transactions have been when the buyer has a FedEx account number. Then, the only difference for me when shipping overseas or domestic is a few lines of an additional form. If a buyer has their own FedEx or UPS account number, makes no difference to me whether I ship domestic or overseas.

PS - Off topic, but man, I wish I still had that ES-339 I sold to some dude in Australia! I want it back!

I've experienced a few problems with Ebayers who are overseas, I don't wish to relive the experience.

Packages get lost easier. When you ship outside of the states... tracking and insurance usually only count for transit within the country. Which means if it get's stolen, smashed, lost or whatever outside of the country it can be a big problem.

Also, if a person in another country deals you dirty... not much you can do about. At least conus if it was important enough you could drive to the persons house and hash it out. Or... involve local law enforcement. You just have fewer options out of the country.

Plus you got guys that put you in kind of a bind because they want you to claim it at a lower value or claim it's a gift so they can avoid import duties or taxes. That leaves the shipper in a position of 1. Putting false info on a government document. 2. undervaluing their gear so that if it does get damaged insurance isn't gonna cover it. 3. Just a plain pain the butt for no extra payoff.

Me too. I always put Conus because that's what my shipping prices reflect, but if someone asks me and covers the extra shipping fees I usually acquiesce.

I thought it was prescribed to nursing mothers. Guinness, not spunk.
