SED Winged C's in my Two Rock

Just thought I'd share this for anyone looking for tube info on Two Rocks. When I bought my Two Rock Onyx it had JJ 6L6GC's in it. The amp always seemed a bit dark with them in it. I tried some Sovtek 5881WXT's in it that I had as back up tubes. Not as dark, but not very rich. I had tried NOS JAN Philips 6L6WGBs, NOS GE 6L6GC's, and original Svetlanas in my previous amp, and I actually preferred the Svetlana's. So I got a great deal on some SED Winged C''s (same as the old Svetlanas) and threw them in my Onyx. Wow. Big difference. Much clearer and richer sounding. Better top end without any hint of harshness or fizz. The attack is much better as well; it tracks fast lines better and notes just pop off an sing. Anyway just thought I'd share. Oh, and I have an RCA 12ax7a in V1 (clean and clear) and an RCA 7025 in V2 (warm and smooth).

These definitely improved my SFTR too. I had old Mesas in there for a long time. Last night I plugged my tele & Ethos into the Twin, which I recently retubed & rebiased. WOW, what a great combination of stuff! I didn't want to stop playing.

A friend had two sets show up microphonic and moved on to something else, so I went with the Ruby EL34BHT ... heard they were similar, but not sure.

Had winged C's in my Carr Vincent. A power spike at a gig took one of the power tubes out. That never happened with any JJ tube I've ever used.

Disclaimer: my post was in no way intended to be a knock on JJ or Sovteks. Different tubes, different amps, and different ears will obviously yield different results. I'm just happy with my results. From past experience, the Svetlanas (SED) did not last as long as my Philips WGB's. At this point though, I don't want to get hooked on NOS power tubes due to cost and availability. It's bad enough that I am def hooked on the RCA 7025 for the lead channel already.

How many power spikes did you have with the JJs? How did the power spikes manifest themselves?
