Thanks!
I'll be forever indebted.

Sounds like a lot of A Major Pentatonic ideas. He's got the pedal A under a lot of the licks in the beginning with single note and double stop lines within the scale. Then I believe he's hitting a C6/9 chord to Bm7 chord to a Bb6/8 chord. He also hits a B11 chord in there like:

| A | A | A | C6/9 | Bm | Bb6/9 | A | C6/9 | B11 | A...

It's not really measure for measure like that though since he's taking liberties with the timing in a rubato kind of way. Sound like he's moving scales per chord like A Major Pent for A, C Major Pent/Lydian for C6/9, B Minor Pent for Bm, Bb Major Pent/Lydian for Bb6/9, B Major Pent/Mixolydian for B11.

Then around :43 it sounds like he moves to A then E, but the chords are freewheeled again and not in measure by measure form. He's hitting Bm and C#m along the way.

Again, there's a lot of Pentatonics used per chord, like A Major Pent for A, E Major Pent for E, B Minor Pent for Bm, C# Minor Pent for C#m, etc, etc...

In that spot in question sounds like a mix of a few things. I don't have my guitar with me but that's what I gather, maybe I'll learn that lick this weekend and post it up. But I'd guess a mix of Mixolydian, with some of the Major modes of the Melodic Minor scale like Lydian Dominant or Mixolydian b6, as well a some chromatic moves (ala bebop style moves).

Great tone and sustain doesn't hurt matters either That was sweet.

Sound to me like he is taking a basic blues riff and repeating it in different keys, starting up in the key a minor-3rd higher and repeating it one step lower each time until he gets back to the original key.

You could also call that a "chromatic move" as the post above says.

Thanks for that.
Yeah, it's mainly the chromatic flurry that I can't wrap my head around. The chordal, mixolydian, and pentatonic stuff is clear (with amazing phrasing, but clear).

Yeah, it's that chromatic move that gets me.
Thanks!

Well...
I still can't wrap my head around it, but I was inspired to just sit and play for a few hours because of this. Got out of a rut and just enjoyed music. So... thanks, Mr Tubbs!

Mike! You're awesome!
Thanks so much.
Seems you learned how to do the "here it is slow" version from Yngwie though (haha).
Cheers,
Chris

Oops, I didn't listen to it to see if it saved it slow, sorry. Do you have any tools for slowing it down? If not, I can try and get it captured tonight.

(I'll remove that link for the time being)

Now that you put it as a wav file, I think I can do it in GarageBand.
Thanks so much!

EDIT: Gahhh! I can't figure out how to do it in GarageBand... I'm a tech dummy...

Reminded me of the intro to Mountain Time by Joe Bonamassa.

Very cool!
Except it's got a D Mixolydian vibe and Tubbs is in E... totally different, totally!

Seriously, even though they've both got the micro-tonal bends and killer vibrato, Tubbs phrasing just seems otherworldly. It seems like he's playing slide or something. Dude has transcended the fretboard.

I truly love the vibe and playing here and would like suggestions of more tunes/players in this vein. Not much to be found by Googling our Mr. Tubbs; should I try Eric Johnson with soul?

Shawn Tubbs played on an album called "Strength" by The Violet Burning. Lotsa killer stuff on that. He plays with Carrie Underwood now. He's also got some sweet Gypsy Jazz stuff on myspace or soundclick (I think...). If you google "seamusmctube" you'll find some stuff. I wish there was more out there.

A lot of the phrasing reminds me of Derek Trucks, especially "Soul Serenade".

Shawn has cited Michael Landau and Scott Henderson as influences... but for some reason I haven't really checked them out so much yet... something worth looking into.
