Favorite Lollar Strat pickups
What's your favorite Lollar strat pickups and why? I'm looking for something that has the chime and sparkle of a vintage strat, but not too weak sounding. I've got a Suhr Classic Strat, and it has the V60LPs in it. Great pickups, but a little too dark for me, want more chime and punch. Thanks for any help.

I'd go for the Lollar Blondes (or Dirty Blondes if you want a hotter bridge pickup). I use the Blackfaces it has more mid range but still on the vintage side. "warmer" sounding due to the increased midrange. Love it though.

Lollar Specials - full of great, clear, strong midrange along with bass and treble.

I have 3 diff. strats with BF, Blondes, and Tweeds, and I would also vote for the Blondes as my favorite. The Blackface are in my G&L Legacy, so they work perfectly in that guitar. My all around favorite set is Blondes with a Tweed in the neck.

Loved the Specials when I had them, so big sounding. People knock them 'cuz they don't quack well, but I never had an issue with that with them...

You'd probably prefer the Blondes for this application. But I love the Blackface Set because they're a little on the nasty side

I am a long-time fan of the Blondes. That said, I got a Nash Strat in a trade that was loaded with Rio Grande Vintage Tall Boys which sound terrific. I swapped them out for Blondes (which were stock in the Nash) but thought the Rio Grandes sounded better. I never thought I'd say that.
This is a '57 style Nash, and the Tall Boys don't sound nearly as good in a 60s (rosewood board) Strat, while I think the Blondes sound good in both.

I put a set of Lollar Dirty Blondes with a blender pot into this Warmoth hardtail build and I was simply stunned at how great they sound! Absolutely fabulous vintage tone!!!!

Wish he could find away to jam that mojo into a set of noiseless pickups!

I've had Tweeds, Blondes, and Blackface.
Tweeds are very classic 50's sounding and a little bit thin. They don't take overdrive all that great but sparkle incredibly and ring like a bell. The neck pickup provides some of the best neck tones out there, but not if you're looking to get to an SRV type sound. Blondes have nice sparkle and quack but still hold together pretty well to stomp on a couple of fuzz pedals. Blackface are hotter than the blondes and don't have quite the sparkle of either the tweeds or the blondes, but are good for heavier overdrive. My favorite is the blondes, which are in my #1 these days. Based on your description of what you're looking for, I would say try a set of blondes. |
