CBS Fenders, particularly as you get into the mid to later 70's, have the reputation they have for a reason. Sure there are good ones, but there is no denying they are not the same guitars Fender was making before Leo sold the company. Thick-skin finishes, mediocre tuners, three-bolt neck...
I don't know how GC goes about estimating value. Does each individual store do it themselves, or do they consult a vintage expert within the GC network? It could be that the local GC guy did not know what he was looking at and would have listed it at $5 or $600?
Ok, I do see some people...
Yeah, that's ridiculous. With Fenders, some people think refinished in a custom color means it's worth half the value of an equivalent all-original custom color. Sorry. A refin is a refin. It doesn't matter what the original color was, it's now worth about half the value of a refinished Sunburst...

For this one, the replaced parts are also a minor hit in value...
It's already been very poorly refinished, or at least oversprayed. The front has been oversprayed around the edges as well, and looks terrible, IMO. I would try to remove the overspray and if that is not possilble, I would get a quality refinish with light aging. In its current condition, it has...
Following up on this, I see there is an upcoming new release, SiX BY SiX. I just listened to the three tracks that are available on Apple Music. I like it, but I am a prog guy. @Volumneknobber thanks for bringing this up.
You are diving into shark infested waters. Do your research, seek opinions and advice from trusted experts.
I really like @Highnumbers advice to make a list of what is most important to you that it is original, and which parts you can accept replacements. And don't compromise thinking you can...
I liked the “3” album he did with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. The two follow up albums released after Emerson’s death are good too. I don’t really know anything about him outside of those three CDs.
