I wouldn’t say my focus is learning to play songs. I play songs because working on just technique or theory is boring. Playing a song puts the technical stuff in context and gives you a real feel for transitions and flow.
I play other people’s songs to stimulate new ideas for my own, which is...
Prior to replacing my windows with ones that have a much better seal, I had to adjust my target humidity based on how cold the night was going to get. otherwise the windows would get not only wet, but iced. 40% if it was above freezing. At freezing I dropped it to 30%. Down to 20% at 0F worked...
You can do a lot playing nothing but pentatonic, but after a while it is likely to get boring, or feel like you are in a rut.
Just add a note from time to time. Some of them you will like and want to do more with them. Others you might not like and prefer to abandon.
Every once in a while I...
I’ve been happy with the value from Private Stock. Excellent attention to detail. No dead spots or wolftones.
My simplest PS
Huge number of fingerboard options
Check the neck joint
I think there is a cross over threshold.
When starting, there is a level of gear that will just be an exercise in frustration. I remember having that kind of guitar in grade school, and there was little chance of anything developing from spending time on it.
Once you get to a guitar that will...
I like to be working on improving several things at the same time, so definitely not in the master it camp.
That said, there are things I’ve worked on for years and have gotten quite good at.
The thing about mastery, is everything might not be in your grasp. I have always felt that by working...
It depends on the guitar.
I have a couple with 9s
One with 9.5
A few with 10s - my default
A couple with 11s (hollow body and DGT)
One with 12s (arch top)
And then there are acoustics. Mostly 12s, some bluegrass, nylon.
Fender makes some really good guitars. I tend to favour the tone of a good Les Paul, but my Fenders feel better in my hands - probably why I have a Thorn tele with P90s in it.
I like to be able to have a conversation with the builder on the way to settling what I actually want. I’m much more confident that I can get what I am looking for talking directly than talking to a dealer, who talks to a rep, who writes some stuff down, that finds its way to the work floor some...
I play classical pieces on electric guitar from time to time. I find some composers (Carulli and Paganini off the top of my head) translate to electric really well. Some composers require left hand fingering that just feels too cramped on my electrics.
If I’m trying to move something written...
I find my SAS very versatile. I used my 99 as my travel guitar for about 10 years because of that.
It isn’t my favourite guitar, but it has much wider range than most. Definitely worth a close look.
