    Do I want a Rickenbacker 350?

I like them but I think the factory wiring on them is pretty silly. We did a rewire for someone a while ago who had a six way switch he wanted in it, looked like a three way, worked like a gearbox - that really opened up the tonal options beyond a standard two pickup Ric. Even if you did three...

    Vintage Gibson acoustics

I love that J200 - they're one of those guitars that's pretty much the exact opposite of my sort of acoustic but there's something about them... Whenever I've shopped for a modern one I've not been able to find one I've thought good enough to justify the expense, I'm nervous about 70s ones and I...

    Vintage Gibson acoustics

I don't remember us ever doing a Gibson acoustic role call, so why not? Who's got one they want to tell me about? Here are my three. The first is an oddball in that Gibson made only two flat top models that year, an L-1 with a arched birch back and an L-0 with a flat birch back, and this is...

In light of the "tire kicker" thread, thought I'd post this Reverb message thread...

@wox is a very patient man! I get a few of these a year at work and since we're a business we're kind of obliged to keep going with these in the name of customer support service, but it becomes almost a morbid fascination to see how far they're going to go on for. I had two at the same time...

    Thinking about a hollowbody...

When you say hollow body, do you mean a centerblocked guitar like a 335? I'll be honest, as a huge 335 fan, they really share more ground with a Les Paul than they do a fully hollow archtop guitar, and they sustain like a solid body. They're a little more open sounding than a Les Paul without...

Was called a "tire kicker" today by a terse, unfriendly TGP seller.....

I once had someone offer something ridiculous like that in person after hours of winding me up in every way possible, I said, 'yeah sure, I can do 300 today' then, as his face lit up, 'so when would you be paying the balance?' I know I've been advocating for the importance of polite replies...

Fantastic! I have a cheap Gibson lap steel but that is something else! How do you tune it?

Gibson Mini-Humbuckers - Neck vs Bridge

No, Gibson just made the one, no difference between bridge and neck. They're great sounding pickups, as long as they're not viewed as substitutes for full size humbuckers - I have a '74 Les Paul Deluxe and it's a wonderful sounding guitar.

Dumb question: what is the overall length of an ES-335?

Mine is 105cm (a bit over 41"). Not counting the strap button. I remember trying to Google this exact same thing on my phone stood in Ikea looking at display cabinets!

    New Project

I'm with Hogy on this one, if this were to be fully restored, it would at best be a refin body partscaster assembled from period correct parts - if at some point in the guitar's future it gets that restoration then plugged humbucker routs under the refin in the context of everything else that's...

Can anyone ID this ‘30’s/40’s Archtop?

I did some googling to back up my previous post which was based on vague memories of guitars I played some time ago. I think the pickup is the only addition - otherwise it's basically this guitar below (Recording King M-4) except for the binding and headstock, which I think is a 'blank' design...

2012 Gibson ES330 VOS with bigsby

An ES330 with a Bigsby had been my go to for live work for a decade or so, I love them. I think I like the sound of Bigsby 330s over the trapeze, it's single but I'm sure there's a bit of a difference. Congratulations!

One day Ima gonna grab one of these.

This, 100% The majority of people regularly checking this subforum are not interested in 90s Epiphones or 80s Corts, but if the threads were left uncommented on they would die a quick death. We can moderate the sub forum perfectly well simply by participating where we're interested and staying...

Can anyone ID this ‘30’s/40’s Archtop?

Hard to tell with absolute confidence from the photos but check out Gibson made Recording King guitars from the 30s, I think that's basically what you might have with an added pickup. Chequerboard binding, firestripe guard and the F holes which are cunkier and curvier than Gibson F holes of the...

Was called a "tire kicker" today by a terse, unfriendly TGP seller.....

That's pretty much how I do it - bash off a response I already know word for word and don't even think about it, takes me less than 20 seconds and keeps my blood pressure at a nice even level!

Was called a "tire kicker" today by a terse, unfriendly TGP seller.....

Agreed, that's ridiculous. I've had similar this year but nothing quite as bad as that. I generally have a stock reply for the lowballs, 'thanks for the offer, I don't mind coming down a bit but but I'm looking for to close to my asking price', second attempt would have been 'I think we're a...

New 2020 Epiphone Casino made in USA!

The basic deal with Epiphone is that Ted McCarty was offered it, went over for a look and decided for the asking price it might be worth acquiring because Epiphone were set up for double bass making and McCarty was interested in the bass business. In the end that came to nothing but Gibson had a...

Was called a "tire kicker" today by a terse, unfriendly TGP seller.....

Even just price it low enough and it'll get bought no questions asked. The problem is people want to have their cake and eat it, get retail prices for stuff without putting in any of the work - in fact it's worse, they feel entitled to get that much without putting in the work, hence the chippy...

When I stopped buying guitars for LOOKS & started buying for TONE...

I've come to the conclusion not to overthink this stuff, I get into guitars because I like how they look or I see someone using one in an interesting way, I do my research into them, if it feels right I'll buy one and live with it a while, see if it works for me. It might be superficial but a...
