Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge, Love is Strong tones...how'd they get them?

Hmm.....thanks. I've heard things about this Tweed Twin, but have yet to experience one. Kinda been tempted to build one, but I've heard some say high is the way to go, while others say low power is the key. Clips I've heard indicate a Tweed Twin may be what I'm hearing on the album. I'll...

Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge, Love is Strong tones...how'd they get them?

Did some listening and I'm leaning toward Electroplex as the answer. The tones don't scream cranked Harvard...they seem cleaner, clearer, bigger, and more put together than what I heard from the Harvard clips.

Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge, Love is Strong tones...how'd they get them?

Well shoot, both of those suggestions make sense. I have further Google-ing to do now. Thanks!

Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge, Love is Strong tones...how'd they get them?

I'm well Fred, thanks. Very nice to see you still around here. I'll PM you back here in a sec. To the rest of ya, I know someone out there, somewhere, knows what guitars/amps Keef and the boys used on this song. :)

Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge, Love is Strong tones...how'd they get them?

Just heard this Rolling Stones song for the first time today, and wow...some really great guitar tones on it. Anyone have any idea what gear they used on this album, specifically this song? I Google'd, but to no avail....thanks in advance!

Marshall JCM800 4x12 cabinet with faded black grillecloth

Interesting....must be a mid-80's thing then. I like it, personally. Best looking Marshall cabs ever, IMHO. That said, I'll be selling my slant 4x12 soon. Hopefully I can track down a straight to replace it. Trouble is, it's hard to find ones in GOOD condition. Mine is unusually nice...

Marshall JCM800 4x12 cabinet with faded black grillecloth

Thanks for the info. I'll try to dig up date code info on my cab and see if that'll help. Regardless, I can't say I've seen for sale a straight, 4x12 version of my slant. I'm sure they're out there; I'll just have to keep looking.

Marshall JCM800 4x12 cabinet with faded black grillecloth

Hi all, I have a JCM800 slant 4x12 that has brown grillecloth. My understanding is this was a run of grillecloth that was made incorrectly and was apt to fading to brown, and Marshall realized this and corrected it. Frankly I love the look, but what I'd LIKE to do is turn this slant cabinet...

New Marshall Origin vs. 2018 Marshall DSL Comparison video:

The DSL sounded much better than the Origin in this video.

NAD - TopHat Emplexador Junior Classic Arrived; First V-Front 1x12

I know....fawn amps are my favorite, followed closely by the Brown era Fender tolex. The fawn tolex Top Hats in the above picture are perfect. My kind of aesthetic.

Thanks Fred....beautiful pic there. Hope you're doing well.

Thinking of going virtually pedal-less for a simple high quality rig. Who has done it?

Did it for a long time with a Tele into a Top Hat Club Royale. Now doing it with an Epi Casino into a DSL 50 and whatever 4x12 sounds best on a given day. High quality pickups/tubes/speakers make a difference, as does A LOT of tinkering with the amp circuit (Sozo caps, circuit tweaks, OT...

NAD - TopHat Emplexador Junior Classic Arrived; First V-Front 1x12

Ooohkay, that makes sense. So you have a "full" Emplexador, just two halves, one in each 1x12 combo. Very interesting. Thanks for explaining that. I too would love to hear clips, as I've been a fan of the Emplexador for some time and am curious as to what Brian has changed in the latest...

NAD - TopHat Emplexador Junior Classic Arrived; First V-Front 1x12

Super cool. Maybe I missed it, but what makes it a "Junior Classic" vs. just an Emplexador 1x12 combo?

Germino Club 40: Celestion G12M Heritage or Greenback RI

Either would be fine, I'm sure. Both are great speakers, but the Heritage M is indeed quieter and has a very organic vibe (whatever that means). I've owned both, and currently am very happy with my 4x12 with Heritage Ms.

On March 2nd, 2017, I talked to Howard Alexander Dumble (Part 1)

The real story here is how bad ass Steve Jordan is. Even without cymbals he's still a better drummer than you.

    Changing amp grillcloth

Never tried doing it, just sent it to Jeff Swanson or to Mather Cabs instead as those guys are AS GOOD AS IT GETS.

Playing with the cab backwards (so you can crank the amp)

Hell yes. One of my fave songs of theirs. On a related note, I seem to remember seeing Bruce Springsteen playing with his cabs angled upward, assumedly to kick the sound pressure away from the stage and allow him to crank the cabs w/o screwing w/things on stage. AND, because this kicks...

    Boutique amps with no chassis

Everything about post #13 is hilarious. The avatar, the .jpg, the signature line....well done, Gentleman from California.

So I answer a guy who is selling a 1987X on CL and I get this in return...

Ah, Craig's List.... Michael, I say find another amp sold by someone who is going to be a communicative, transparent seller. There are other 1987x's in the sea. :)

Wizard vs. (Insert Marshall type of your choice)

That right there sums it up perfectly. I can't say that I'm a fan of a particular era/model of Marshall, so much that I'm a fan of the Marshall "thing". So, it's not like I'm looking for a specific year specific serial number run of JMP so much as I'm looking for that paradigmatic Marshall...

Wizard vs. (Insert Marshall type of your choice)

I've Googled, and there ain't a ton of info on Wizard amps, likely because they're $$$ as heck.....but, they appear to be awesome, so I'm curious if any of y'all have owned a Wizard (of some type...vintage or modern classic...) and also owned a comparable other amp (Germino, Marshall, Top Hat...

Wizard MCII.......for slight breakup to mid gain Strat tones?

This clip is a good example....more gain than I'd typically use, but I can tell that if I backed off the gain I'd be good for my thing. Wizards just seem to have this thick, chewy snarl with the right amount of thump on the bottom and openness on top. A neat trick. Can anyone speak to the...
