A benefit of a class system is that you still have a distinct class of people who do not mistake editorial and tabloid for journalism while leading the world in tabloid obsession.

There are a couple of important considerations to make before blaming this on Global 'Warming' or Climate Change.

India gets very, very hot - fact. Andra Pradesh has an average temp of 39.4 deg C (103 F) in May. This is obviously a severe heat wave.

Keep in mind as well, that there is probably no air conditioning there, except in the main cities. There are probably masses of homeless people or people living in shanty towns.

Here is a 14 day forecast for Visakhapatnam in Andra Pradesh http://www.timeanddate.com/weather/india/visakhapatnam.

Sydney had a heat wave like this a few years ago but I don't recall many deaths...

I happen to be having lunch with some Indian friends today and will ask them about this. They are a pretty reliable source, one of them having been the Vice Chancellor of a large Indian University.

Hmmm. Don't the agw folks always say weather does not equal climate?

But in regard to the story, i don't understand how people survive (or stand) those temps. If it's 90F and humid, i'm a miserable sweaty guy.

It's the seventh leading story on CNN.

That featured story at the top left changes in real time. You can check 10 minutes apart and there will be different stories.

yeah, that's pretty hot but it's a dry heat!

it gets hot here a lot and people do succumb to it.

older people mostly with no a/c, of course.

oh, and dogs from the idiots that take them for a hike in 95f and 90% humidity.

india has over 1 billion people. probably more than that die from auto accidents every day.

    sorry to sound so crass.

Weather is screwed up all over the globe: crazy cold Winters - side effect of Climate change - there is no local phenomena that is not part and parcel of the entire global shift.

the fact that every year tops the previous year in global average temp means that the heat is up everywhere despite occasional freak cold spells.

In all honesty I can't imagine the kind of media-closet and echo chamber one would have to inhabit, what kind of anti-evidence based frame of mind one would have to adopt in order to say, out loud and in public that they don't believe in Global Warming?! Its dumbfounding: I see it as embarrassing as going outside wearing giant diapers and nothing but - I mean it should be humiliating to admit to being so ill informed and incapable of understanding . . . .

I think this is a fair point. You can't really say with any certainty that an individual/local event is related to Global Warming or not, you can only look at large-scale trends.

That said, I think there's absolutely no question that man-made Global Warming is happening, and that we will likely see more and more heat waves, severe droughts, etc.

And the fact that it's been ignored by US media is pretty ridiculous (I hadn't heard about it), it sounds like a really serious situation.

It won't mean thing to people until their insurance companies start canceling or failing to renew their policies. Hit them in the wallet is the only way to get their attention.

    Right, Kmart shoppers?

It's an outrage. Someone should do something about it. Hey, I'll post on a forum.

Yes, of course it gets hot in India. They have known about this for eons. They dress for it, their houses are maximized for comfort in the heat and they plan their activities accordingly. This incidence proves that this is not normal Indian heat. Takes a lot to kill an Indian with heat. That's the message.
