What make? Im looking towards the Fargen Blackbird. Not really sure what other makes I should consider. I like the sound of the Dr Z Carmen Ghia, but I'm not 100% thrilled with el84's. Ive owned a few el84 amps and love the chime but want a smoother over drive. I dont really want a master volume either, and would prefer treble, mid, bass controls as opposed to a single tone control, although that isnt as important as the master volume being absent. What do you have? What can you recommend? Cheers, Thanks:band

I just took delivery of a Fuchs Blackjack 21 combo. The Red, White & Blue in it isn't broken in yet but running it through some well used G12H's it is outstanding. Putting the Plush Extreme Creme in front of it turns it into a monster that might fit your requirements ... with or without the pedal.

Check out the clips on the site and try to play one in the store.

I've owned both the ghia and z28. Both cool, but I only kept the z28. It's actually fairly sparkly, if you don't use too blunt a speaker.

I'd check out a Z28, or a Maz Jr...for smooth tones, check out a Budda SD-18 sometime....EL84's can be very smooth, but it's in the design of the amp....or an alessandro Beagle or English...

Victoria has a couple of cool models-Trem of the Trem, Electro-King. I would also consider a tweed Deluxe, or a Princeton Reverb.

    Mesa Blue Angel...seriously. 6V6 AND EL84s 15/33/38 watts....Like a fender princeton bred with an AC30

Save some money for pete's sake, a good amp is a good amp. Must it cost $2,000+ to be considered legitimate?

I'm outta here before the bashing starts

You can't beat an old Princeton Reverb.

If you want 6V6/EL84 - D/13 JRT all the way. Just lacks the tonal options

If you want 6V6 alone in low wattage - check out the D/13 SJT, like a Princeton/Deluxe Reverb on roids

You didn't say if reverb was important or not. If not, then a Gries 18 would be perfect for you.

I just picked up a Traynor Custom Valve 20 YCV-20WR used mint condition for $350. I's 18watt class A w/channel switching, effects loop & XLR out, accutronics reverb, Celestion Greenback. This little amp sounds absolutely great and it's touch sensitive to your attack. It evokes a blackface vibe and yes uses 2-EL84s & 3-12AX7s

Deluxe reverb or 5E3 clone are both nice. I have a Quinn Octal Derby on order to fill out the gap between tweed and blackface...................
Also like the simplicity of the Z28.
    Gas? Whaddya mean gas.................?

I did the same thing. The Z28 sounds like a big amp, the Ghia sounds like a small amp. The Ghia though has some real flavor to it, while the Z28 has less personality but is more of a workhorse that can cover lots of different ground.
