    Hey guys,

I came across a guy that claims to be the original owner of a 1953 Les Paul GoldTop and he wants to sell it for $2900. As far as I know something like this would go for $40,000. Do any of you have any tips on verifying the authenticity of this instrument. I really know nothing about Gibsons of this age and although from the pictures it looks to be real, I don't know what I should be looking for. If it is the real McKoy I would be a fool to let it slip away, but I know there are a lot of fakes on the market. Any help would be much appreciated.

1st thing. look for the dropped gibson logo on the headstock. inlay material would be a dead giveaway as well.

As jaded as we all are there may still be some deals to be had. Probably a reissue if nothing else but still worth something. I had a guy in jersey sround 2004 who offered to trade me a 53 les paul that had been stripped for my g&l legacy and a blue usa strat...I declined....Had no idea and thought he was trying to scam me. He sold it to a mutual friend for 8500.00 recently....Please do your homework and protect yourself...Good Luck

Is it local to you? Do you have any gambler in you? If you can, post pics.

Too bad, but from what I read they're not really players guitars. Can't intonate em and the neck angle makes it impossible to get low action. I just thought it would be cool to get on stage with a piece of wood older than me :)

Please don't take my 'gambler' comment to mean that I would send the guy a money order sight unseen. If it was local, I'd call the guy.

Hello again isn't the way to start a conversation with someone you have never spoken to before. You neglected to answer a single question posed about this guitar. Furthermore, where are the detailed pics I requested? You are what we call in America sir, a scurvy, shyster, bastard. Now off to Hell with you.

    Hi Matte,
Would you be so kind as to explain what this means? No inlay at all? or, positioning of "Gibson" on the headstock veneer?
    Thanks kindly,
    Dave

This paris duarte is still posting ads in every city's Craigslist. I emailed him or her and asked if it was still available. Here was the response:

Hello,Thank you for your interest in my guitar. The price i am hoping tosell it is $2900 US.The shipping taxes are included in this price (that means i will payall shipping taxes, as seller)Also the guitar will come with it`s original case. Regarding the item i have for sale you have to know that this is 100%original, not a re-issued guitar.I was amazed on how this guitar played and sounded. The shape of this guitar is incredible. No dings, or dents no scratches, everything is in perfect conditions. You have to know that i am not a musician, and i dont know many things about musical instruments. The guitar belongs to my brother. He was a musician, and i know all this stuff regarding the guitar from him. He died one week ago in a bike accident. He lived with his family in Canada. The guitar is now in BritishColumbia, Canada.I am now here as i took care of the funerals. Because i have no usefor this i am selling it.I will use for shipping UPS Expedite and the package will arrive inabout 3 working days. For payment UPS Exchange - a UPS service that assure a secure payment. I wait your further questions and i will provide any infos you need.Thank you Regards.

Just to let everyone know, these guitars are manufactured in China. You can purchase them on-line for about $300 directly from the factory. I've seen them in person and usually the headstocks have cheesy in-lays. The rest of the guitar looks fine, but there are differences.

As stated that guitar's been on Craigslist for awhile. Check out completed auctions on eBay...there's a picture of the exact guitar if he sends you picts.

The 1953 Gibson Gold Top you saw is a counterfeit from China. See:
