1962 Gretsch 6117 pickup question

    I've been advised that the low output pups in this guitar (HiLo Trons) could be made to sound much better if the pups were closer to the strings. Further, as they have been raised as high as they will go, I was advised to get something to put underneath the pups to shim them up some more until they are right underneath the strings, as close as possible without interfering with playability.

    Can anyone recommend some sort of thin rubber sheet material or other appropriate material to boost pup height? I don't want any permanent mods or mods that would compromise the finish or wood of the guitar.
