Greetings! I am really a strat player (hiss boo hiss boo!!) but I have a chance to purchase a 1973 Les Paul Studio in good condition. Have really very little idea about Gibsons. Any insight on what to look for and how to check authenticity? Thanks for any help!!

No Studios until early 80`s. So there is your first clue.

Have any pics or other info about the pickups, color, etc...? As "Caretaker" said, it's definitely not an LP Studio. But it could still be a cool guitar!

Hey thanks for the info!! That's the kind of stuff that helps when trying to buy used.........the guy wants $1100 which already seemed pretty reasonable for an older guitar. I will ask about the no studio editions before the early 80's; how can one date Les Pauls accurately? Is it just with serials? With the Fenders, you can pull the neck and see if there is any date imprinted on the heel. Thanks for the clue!!;)

    Uhhh...Thats more like a 93 studio....Stay away...Scam dude

Besides I believe if it were a 73 it would have a three piece body....There is no way that that picture is a 1973....It even looks like it has the studio trussrod cover....

I believe that to be a recent LP Studio. I think they had ebony boards up until the mid '90s or something, didn't they? That board is rosewood. I bet it's late '90s. Either way, it's not that old.

Do you know the serial number? The year will be the 1st and 5th digits of the serial number for this type of guitar.

Oh, it looks like the serial number is in the ad. It's a 2002 model.

There are always a few Studios for sale right here on TGP. There is a beautiful Vintage Mahoghany I sa a few days ago for $650. Look around here.

$1100 is way too high for a Studio model no matter what year it was made.
I wonder if that place has a 1892 Moderne for sale?

It is a newer LP Studio-no Studios in '73. The only "studio" type of guitar back then was the LP Recording which had low impedance oval shaped black plastic covered pickups and an XLR output jack-a favorite of Les Paul BTW.

Thanks for all the info guys........kind of knew I would get the right answers here!! I think I'll pass......just thought if it really was an older Gibson, it would be a good deal. Maybe they meant 1993 Studio......either way, I think my first LP would have to be a nicely bound and flamed Custom! Thanks again........

The ad has a number in it that I believe is the serial number. If so, it's a 2002 year Les Paul Studio.

    1973 GIBSON LES PAUL
    STUDIO MODEL
    WITH CASE
    CHERRY RED

As others have already said...it's not a 73' and is overpriced.

LP Studio's show up used on Craigslist often enough for about $700 with case.
