I'd make it an audio taper pot, based on the behavior of the volume controls in the V-4B I worked on. You'd probably also want to convert the two external amp jack arrangement to a line out / line in setup, with the input jack having a normally closed wafer. It looks like the rest of the components in the vicinity are identical, give or take resistance values.

From the V4 forum: "For under $5.00 one can unleash the beast in a V-4 or VT-22 amp by adding a master volume control in a very convenient location (R21 and R23 get replaced with a 100K pot and 10K resistor connected to the wiper arm)"

There is more info in the forums also. http://www.ampegv4.com/index.php

Quick update. For now, I removed the mod and reverted it back to just having both Ext. Amp jacks.
I ordered a 500k Linear pot, and I'm going to experiment something more like the schematic above. I think that may have been what the original version of the mod I had was trying to accomplish — or at least something very similar.

Found this while digging around forums:

here it is. it's a simple pre phase inverter volume pot, with resistor change.

-change r21 (100k) to 470K
-disconnect the wire that leads into r23 (10k) and solder it to the input of a 500k pot (the schematic calls for a lin taper) the output of the pot is wired to where you disconnected the wire from r23.

that's it
Quoted from here:

Seems like that mod is exactly the same as the schematic above for the master volume V4. I'm unclear about the "wire that leads to r23" part. Perhaps it will be more apparent when I'm looking at the amp.
