Any thoughts as to the quality of this beast in original condition? Value?
80s Tokai Strats are superb. I've owned several and while I'm one of the first guitar snobs to say that a MIJ, MIK, etc is never the equal of the original, some of the best Strats I've ever played were Tokais from the 80s.
what should I pay for one in 8/10 condition?
I saw one on Reverb for 2 or $300 ..
300 would be a great price if it's truly an 80's Tokai.
I had an '80 ST80 and that's one of the few that I REALLY regret selling
Sold mine in 07 for $750.
Depends if it's an original model with fender headstock or the next version.
The models ST80 and above are nitro, below that are poly. All are good guitars.
If it has the soft V neck and E series pickups I'd go up to $700 CDN and hope for as low as $450. I've had 2 1984 ST60s with the soft V and Es and they were some of the best strats I've ever played.
(assuming with your handle that you're Canadian, hence the pricing).
I just traded a killer 1980 Tokai Silver Star to a guy as part of a deal for a classic car who I think is looking to move it. I'd be happy to pass along any interest. I've ownedseveral Tokais from the 80s over the years and they've all been top notch.
I have an 80's Goldstar in Black, but how do you tell what year it is? Best I can come up with is 84 or 85.
Serial #, logo, headstock shape...several ways.
