I recently bought this guitar from a local music store (they got it in on trade this week). It's a 1984 Les Paul Studio Custom Shop Edition. Has the Pat. Appl. For sticker pickups - I assume these are Shaws. Gold hardware with Grover replacement tuners.

The guitar is extremely clean and has some very light finish checks. Looks like it spent most of its life in the case.
I don't recall ever seeing this finish color before. Looks like a burgundy or violet burst.
Have any of you seen this finish? Do you what Gibson referred to it as?
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Not to dis your guitar, but... it's interesting. Not for me, but interesting...

IIRC There shouldn't be a "Custom Shop" for Gibson in 1984.

I'm not sure Gibson made a Studio in '84

The color certainly takes getting used to, but it really looks better in person.

There most certainly was a Cusom Shop in 1984. I've seen and owned many LPs, 335s, and other Gibsons from the early to mid 1980s with Custom Shop Edition Stickers just like this one. I even purchased a few new in the early to mid 1980s.

    Apprciate your comments.

The LP Studio was introduced in 1983. This is an early one for sure.

    Thanks,

call gibson and give them the serial number and they should be able to give you the color.

I stand corrected. I found one recently on ebay that was red color but the custom shop created sticker was on the bottom back headstock.

Seems a pretty rare find though!

While you're at it, see if they can refinish it for you. he he he, sorry.

Do YOU like the color? If so that's all that matters :AOK and it is surely a unique looking guitar. I've never seen anything like it. Ever. Anywhere...

i've got a 98 les paul special in a green color i had never seen and after several attempts to find out the true color i called gibson and was told the official color was spearmint. Not many of them were made in that color but they knew by the serial number what the original finish was....only took about 5 minutes...the number is on their website somewhere.

good luck....nothing wrong with unique color guitars!!

I think it must have "Let's drink a bunch of Jack Daniel's" day at Gibson on August 15, 1984:rotflmao

You're right, the color of the Goddess looks close, but I'm sure it's not the exact same finish.

I assume it was custom ordered by someone who just had to have this color.

    Thanks!!

    Thanks ww!

I called Gibson customer service and they could not help me over the phone. I was told to send them an email with pics. and they would get back to me. Hopefully I'll hear something from them.

    Regards,

    Paul

Gibson wants too much to refinish it. I'll just do it myself with brush:crazyguy
It's not my favorite color, that's for sure. Certainly something I would have never special ordered - even though I was pretty crazy back in '84!

I'm old enough to remember seeing new Fenders in music stores during the mid 1960s. I never liked foam green or burgundy mist metallic at the time, but certainly wish I had a Strat or Tele is one of those original finishes today. Probably not the greatest analogy:rolleyes:

    Thanks for your comments!!

    Regards,

    Paul

...and have a bowl of "Purpleberry Crunch" cereal?

It would be even better if you could get them to admit the color will now be known as "light urple."

    Thanks ww!

John, one of Gibson's customer service reps., told me that their serial number records don't go back to the early to mid-1980s (I find that a bit hard to believe). He wanted me to email pics. so they might determine the official name of the color.

    Paul
