Try the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass. For $275, you'll be REALLY really suprised.

I like it ALOT better than most mexican Fender jazz basses I've played.

I bought the Squier VM, and totally stock, I'm totally happy with it.

Those Squires are damn good. Often, the colors and finishes are not as good as a more expensive one but I've played one at GC that had almost all the mojo of my old number one stacked volume Jazz Bass. The Squire I was playing on at GC was $175.00 too. Certainly a great starter instrument.

yes, i've looked into the squier and look ok..any input on the ibanez gsr190 starter pack ?

since i'm new to basses dont take offence in my noobish questions

is the J-bass versatile ?..i mean can you play from blues to metal ?

what are the biggest differences (tone wise) between the P-bass and J-bass ?

i saw basses with a J pickup in the bridge and P pickup(s) in the neck..are they some kind of crossover ?

i recommend a mexican p-bass or an american beater p-bass. you can play any and all types of music on it, and they're readily available. an unqualified success. enjoy!

Playerunk - the affinity series have simpler details, and to my knowledge, a thinner body.

The cool thing about the Vintage Modified Jazz is that it has a maple body. And the tone is great.

The MB4 basses are alright, but relatively modern looking. If you ever wanted to sell it, you'd get more money back from a tried and true vintage shape bass. P, J, something like that.

The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz is a hard to beat, SOLID feeling, SOLID sounding, super versatile bass. Heck yes, it can go from blues to metal. And for a first bass, I think that the J-Bass tone is a little more "forgiving" than the P-Bass tone, for someone starting out.

I wouldn't even bother with one of those ibanez starter packs. You're gonna want a new bass in a month.

The squier jazz will keep you satisfied for a LOT longer.

You'll do much better buying used. Go play a bunch and see what speaks to you.

The main reason you want Squire is one thing: resale.

I bought a 5 string Douglas Bass from Rondo music I really like. With a Fender Deluxe Gig Bag, came to $300 and it sounds great. I'm a guitar player by trade so take that in consideration

    :agree

Especially on a budget - lots of good basses hiding amongst the dogs. Just try to get your mits on a few and find one that works for ya.

Bring a bass playing buddy that you trust (fun day out to be sure).

Happy hunting and let us know what you end up with.

    cheers,

    Edward

One word for you - "Roadtrip". Go for an adventure to a city that doesn't have such slim pickings.

    Cheers,

    Edward

Looks cool Doctor!! Rondo makes pretty good stuff. A friend of mine bought a Rondo 5 string as well and liked it. Now she plays a 4 string P-bass. She loves it. I recently bought a beater P-bass and am very satisfied with the tone etc. But I agree that it is a sit down and play unplugged and then plug it in before you buy type of deal to find the best possible one out of the choices that you have.
Good luck. Let us know what you get.:AOK
