During the test at Fiorano, Niki said the car understeered badly and would need suspension modifications. The Commendatore said we will make the changes but if you are not one second quicker you are gone. Needless to say Herr Lauda was more than one second quicker.

Thanks for sharing that - I've bought into that urban legend that the issues between Niki and Enzo started immediately after he pulled off of Suzuka in 1976, not that it simmered through the off-season until they were regrouping for 1977. Great interview!

He hasn’t been in the paddocks since last spring 2018. He got sick before the European races last season and had his lung transplant in July or August last year.

That's right, he never was shown in the paddocks after his surgery last year.
Godspeed, Niki, and thank you for your incredible contributions to the sport.

Yep. He was a BAMF, for lack of a better acronym.

Actually Niki "stole" Marlene away from actor Curt Jurgens. Marlene was Jurgens girlfriend at the time.
As you know Jurgens played "Stromberg" in the James Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me".

I get what you’re saying: there won’t be a lot of on-track passing. But you just have to look at other stuff. Can you imagine driving a fragile race car at 10/10ths on those narrow streets? Pay closer attention to pit strategy. Maybe just watch qualifying if you think the polesitter is the de facto winner.

Just checked the weather, and unfortunately it doesn't look like rain is expected. Too bad because that always makes for an interesting Monaco race.

Monaco: Watch it if you must/want; I skip it every year and think it should be removed from the schedule until/unless there's a new spec car that can actually race on this historic circuit.

Seriously, I do love Monaco. I get that it's often a parade and the track would never get approved as a venue today, but those guys are doing some astounding driving on narrow, twisty streets. Throw in a little rain (not expected this year) and see some heroic driving. Remember Senna's second place after starting 13th was simply amazing.
