    Welcome back pedal-heads:D

During the break I posted a series of Phaser demo vids over on HCfx. I'd thought I'd share them with the folks on TGP that don't make it over there.

    Enjoy. -John.

a classic sound with a healthy boost. a simple, cutting whoosh. moderate tone-suck bypass

very rich. limited options, but very cool sounds with a nice ramp when changing speeds. terrible bypass tone-suck

Wacked and wonderful. It covers some classic tones, but has some very tweaked sounds all it's own. It can do an ok phase90 sound but is more polite than the original. Modern features; true bypass, status light, and power-out.

    cheers.

    (edit):
The HBE can sound a bit subtle when compared to some of the vintage phasers. This is because the HBE emphasizes the highs and lows, while many other phasers have a mid emphasis. The Psilocybe gets a few sounds all of it's own, (like the ultra-chewy cycling wah sound in the demo).

Of the lot, the HBE and the b.y.o.c. Phase Royal get the most time on my guitar pedalboards. The Moogerfooger and the script Phase90 have both done time on my bass board. The Ibanez and the Moogerfooger are both really cool with a keyboard.

    different strokes...

    :)

I was going to say, of the clips, the phase royal sounds the most usable to me.

Well for me the order of use would be(based on your clips alone):

    Phase Royal clean
    Moogerfooger 12 stage phaser

    HBE Psilocybe phase

I love your videos, thanks again! You should build a reference site for all your clips and info. Anyway, I have a script 90 that I love...so that is obvious a favorite of mine. The Phase Royal was amazing, I was impressed back when you did the first video of it.

    ...love the fingers segue.

Where would the Red Witch Moon Phaser fall in this bunch?

I don't own a Red Witch Moon Phase, but others have told me that it sounds similar to the Ibanez and the Moogerfooger. Based on clips and other's descriptions, the RWMP seems to specialize in very wet and high-fi types of phase sounds, not the chewy pushed mids of a Phase-90. Maybe a Red Witch owner could chime in with a more accurate description.

    Hi Fatback-
I ended up buying the Moon Phaser yesterday, but after all these years I must admit it is my first phaser. Up until now, I've only used chorus and trem for modulation. I'm not sure how to compare this pedal to all the ones you have demoed. However, I can't get enough of it--plenty of interesting sounds I never had before.
Stupid question....just HOW is phasing different from chorus? Seems to be a similar kind of effect..

By the way--great videos! I can tell you were having fun, too.

I was really impressed by the HBE and the BYOC. Does anyone know if BYOC plans to sell them again in they future? If not, does anything else get similar Univibe and phaser sounds?

Can the HBE get in the univibe ballpark?

(Hey fatback, I see you're a McCoy. I'm descended from ol' Devil Anse Hatfield. If I could play well, a "dueling banjos" would be in order, but I ain't got the skills.)

To the best of my knowledge; a phase is a series of sweeping filters, while a chorus or flanger are based on a very short modulating delay. I'm sure others with more expertise can chime in with better descriptions.

-I believe that Keith has big plans for b.y.o.c. but is still setting things up right now...
    ;)

--The HBE is like a phaser crossed with a vibe, so I'd say yes, but not excactly like a pure vibe.

---no sweat, Mr. Hatfield, I moved on long ago.:YinYang

I did have a Hatfield in the bunk above one summer at camp... somebody's bad joke.

    cheers. -John.

Great vids! I'm impressed with the BYOC. You should check out a DeArmond Twister. The deepest phasing I've ever heard. Similar to the Moog. Also, the MXR block logo phaser sounds a bit different from the script. I've got an old gray Dod 201 and it's very similar to a Phase 45. More vibe than phaser. And I love my Shannon!:)

Fatback, since you have done a bunch of phaser demos, I'm curious if you've compared the Maxon Rotary Phaser. I have another thread on this one, but I was curious if you could compare it to these you demoed.

Good job on the videos, very entertaining! It's weird though, 'cause I really wanted to love that Phase Royale ('cause it looks the coolest!) but I found it just ok, whereas I've always hated the phase 90 ('cause it reminds me too much of EVH) but I actually loved it the most.

Any thoughts (from anyone) on the small stone? I always thought it sounded pretty cool but now I can't remember 'cause I have 6 other phasers swirling around in my head!

Of all those I prefer the Phase Royal.

I had the phase royale here in the mystery box & I own a script phase 90.
I could dial any setting on my phase 90 in on the Phase royale + it did tones more.
Great pedal,I'll be getting one if he brings them back.
