Wish this existed as a production amp.
This is the truth. I've been on a similar quest for 20 years and the best/closest I've found is a PRRI.
The only single ended amp I've found that nails BF Clean is the old Fender Champ 12, available used (one 6L6, 12" speaker, nice reverb). Just skip the gain channel.

The simplest, cheapest, and most effective way to get more headroom from a low wattage amp is by choosing a high efficiency speaker. Compare the speaker ratings in decibels for 1 watt at 1 meter. Note that a 3 dB difference is a noticeable audible difference that is equivalent to doubling the wattage of an amp. So a 6 watt amp using a speaker rated at 103dB is equivalent to a 24 watt amp using a speaker rated at 97dB.
Not to hijack this thread, but anyone have any recommendations for a 1-15 watt Tweed-sounding amp head?
Fender made a 5E3 head. Can find them used if you look hard enough, but they ain't cheap.
Vox MV50 Clean running into a 16 ohm cab puts our 12.5 watts. Running into an 8 ohm cab gives you 25 watts.
It does a nice job of with the clean tones and is a great pedal platform.
The price and weight or great. $200 & 1 pound.
But it seems to have a flatter eq whereas a true blackface has a mid scooped eq. Nothing an eq pedal can't fix.
It sounds like you want a Princeton Reverb to me. A little more wattage than 5-10, but you can re-baffle with a 12 inch speaker if you really need to. I gigged a SFPR with an efficient 10" speaker with a full on rock band for a while. Was asked to turn down a time or two actually. The Chihuahua certainly sounds like a good option as well.
I love that little amp. I have the head that I use either with a 1x12 or 2x12 cab
3rd Power Spanky MKII
has to be the gries 5!
The luthier I use for all my guitar work has a Gries 5 with the Eminence GASC-64 speaker in it. Sounds really great, and surprisingly versatile despite the simple layout. Gries is local to us, which is a bonus, and have a stellar rep.
Didn't read the thread, so sorry if this is a repeat...
Cheapest Vibro Champ you can find with a replacement 1x12 combo cab.
I would contact Jim over at Lil Dawg Amps. He builds good stuff at good prices.
Ampeg just doesn’t get the love around here that I think it deserves. I have a recent GVT15 and I too have referred to it as a deluxe reverb killer. Sounds great all throughout the dial and with mids and gain controls I can get a pretty convincing BF/SF tone using a 73 pro reverb and a 65 Super ri as a reference. Sounds really creamy when wound up too.
I'll say it again. The Greis 5 checks all the boxes. Call and talk to Dave about your needs. He's a great guy and easy to talk to. For 800$ you'll have a keeper.
which swart would you recommend for blackface tones, light edge of breakup? ala hendrix little wing?
