I'm having trouble deciding between a 50 watt plexi or jtm45 kit. I like the tone of the jtm45, but I like having the extra power on tap with the plexi.

What's the headroom like on the plexi? Is there really a big difference in volume between the two? Would I be able to notice the difference?

If I kept my plexi on lower volumes, could I get the jtm45 tones?

yea theyre very similar amps apart from the rectifier and some other minor changes [tubes also] I prefer the 50 because its tighter and theres more headroom when playing clean but I like classic rock and therefore a tighter low end. very similar output though.

i always thought the jtm45 was cleaner.. well I play mostly acdc type tones... good overdrive, but still clear.. i don't like to have too much gain

Yea Im much the same, the superlead is brigher which ofcourse comes across as "gainier" otherwise theyre still very similar.

    for ac/dc;

    74-76 angus 2245
    77-79 angus 1987(jtm50,1959 & 2203 is more accurate).

    74-79 mal 1992(2203s also from 77).

is what i would use to replicate their classic tones from them periods.

1987x type amps do not have a tone of headroom.

I can get a great Knoffler type tone at loud gig volumes with mine and single coil pickups.

    Two totally different amps.
The fifty will be a bit louder, but not that much. And break up sooner.
JTM will have more clean headroom. And a some what glassier tone.

Both awesome amps. I had the same search before I landed my 50.
It'll still have a great clean and then start to break up around 4.
Check out http://www.wildwestguitars.com/ and click on Mojave amps for a few sound clips. That might give you an idea of the differences.

Or, think Clapton on the Beano recordings, for your JTM
And Betts on most ABB stuff for the 50

I can do that with my strat, but results vary with humbuckers.
