I put a 5751 Jan in my BJr, but it's been a while. If I get a chance I'll plug it back in tonight and let you know. If I remember correctly, it does lower the gain and does stay cleaner longer, but to be honest, I just can't remember right now.

You may lose a small amount of percieved loudness. Power tubes are rated for output depending in part on the amount of signal they are recieving. If you reduce that signal, you reduce the power. But it isn't linear, so it won't be as much as 30% in most amps with more than 1 gain stage. It is probably more like 2-10%.

    thanks for the figure (2-10%)

it seems worth it considering the BJ is unusable (almost a grunge sound)
at 10......and it goes to 11

The 5751 is my favorite preamp tube. You might lose some max volume, but having less preamp gain will allow you to turn your master volume up and work the power tubes harder. So you will probably get more useable volume, less fizz, and more cleans. Try it, you'll probably like it.

First tube in the signal chain. Its also often called the input tube. Bob
